Hi All,

I wondered if you guys know anywhere i can get a nice full grip throttle for my upcoming build?
i have a crystalyte 36-72v 35a controller and i'm after something that will plug straight in, give me a good quality rubber grip and come with a matching grip for the other side?
Do they make them?

cheers all,
Nice to see everyone again :)

I know you can get a Magura full grip throttle. It's a potentiometer type throttle, so in order to use it with that controller, you'd want to add a pair of fixed resistors in line with two of the wires (not the signal wire), to match the output of a hall throttle.
EV Deals and Thunderstruck used to have them.

I'm not sure where you can get a full grip hall throttle.

Hi Nick,Fechter,

Thanks for the replies - Nick yes Mark did supply me with a throttle but it's made from hard plastic and doesn't feel very nice at all, i dare say a few blisters holding on to it will ensue :)
I will pobably have to use it though as i don't know squat about the electrics and even soldering a couple of resistors is quite daunting for me (stop laughing fechter :) ).
You guys will see as i blog my build that i am a complete novice and i'm relying on knoxie and yourselves to help me through.
I have all the parts i need but i need to get some torque arms made and whilst i'm at the machinists i going to see if they can make me a new seat too.I have my blog on the other "v" site which i i will update this weeked although it's such a slow site that i'm thinking of movin it here - the idea was to blog a novices build so if anyone else like me wants to try and build an off road ebike they can look at what's involved - do we have blogs here or should i just start a new topic and post my progress there?

Once again thanks for the help guys :)

These guys show one on their website:

Look down on the page for the X-T300. That should be simply a matter of matching the wires up properly, no resistors needed.

i think that's the one i've got !! lol
i think some more home brew is needed here - the action of it is certainly nice enough but the grip itself isn't the greatest, i'm tempted to take it apart and look how it works :) is where all the tinkering begins? damn it hooked now.

All the crystalyte throttles work on the same principle.. only difference is the

LED

or

Non-LED types..

The LED throttles can only be used at 36 or 48v.. and have a potential of shorting out in the wet.. the +5v for the throttle and the circuit board lead are very close to each other and when wet " Can " go Full-On by accident !!!.. Be Aware !

Non-LED throttles can be used at any voltage..

The thumb. half twist.. or full-twist all work on the same principle, the grip itself is differnt in apearance only.

Personally .. i like the look.. feel and everything else with the half-twist the best of them all.

Yeah, my kit had a full twist when I got it, didn't like.

Well, most people if they have a bike with a grip that's gotten loosey
goosey, they would try to repair this. A full grip throttle is broken like this
by design... Just try & hop your bike over a pothole with a grip that's
designed to turn out from under your hand... As far as handling/safety
goes, I'd rate it worse compared to no grips on the handlebar.

Obviously, your mileage may vary...

But it's with that in mind that I've gotten a half grip to replace it. I figure
that having 1/2 of the grip that's actually usable as a grip should make for
less of a handicap? Havn't had the chance to try it out for real yet...
If I had to buy another throttle, I'd try half grip or maybe thumb.

BTW, Garry of http://www.ebikeconversions.com/
got me my throttle + both grips for cheaper then powerscoots or
electricrider sells equivalents. Quite a bit cheaper at it.

The one I got is "Standard Half-Twist Throttle" as seen here:
http://www.electricrider.com/parts/throttles.htm

Being a long time motorcycle rider, I preferred the full grip at first, and the Magura is a well made one that feels just like a gasser.
But the Vego came with a half grip throttle, a pretty nice one, and I got used to that pretty quickly. Since I have several of them in a box, that's what's going on any future projects. I dread thumb throttles.

yeh i agree the thumb throttle is not for me either -i rode a quad with thumb and i didn't like it all.
ypedal i think advised me to go half throttle so i could grip well over the rough ground, this is probably the best option but i had motorcycles too so the full grip keeps calling.
the magira looks better than the one i have would i need to change connections?

i also prefer a full throttle having ridden motorcycles for many years. none of the ones i have ever seen have a soft grip. you could get a foam slip-on and make them softer.

if you use a magura pot throttle on a system designed for a hall throttle you will have all the throttle in the middle third of the rotation. this is because the pot goes from 0-5v and the hall throttle only goes from 1-4v so the controller intended to use a hall throttle only responds to 1-4v.

you can make a pot throttle work properly by adding resistance to both ends to make it span a more narrow voltage range. on a 5k throttle if you put a 1k at each end that is a good starting point. a 2k pot at each end would let you completely adjust the span and range.
