Norco Empire 8150 build (page 20 pic heavy)

Yep, it snapped the drop out on the first test ride. I reinforced it with 5mm thick steel torque plates on both sides of the drop outs and it now handles all the punishment I can give it. Touchwood! I made them with the most basic of tools, a $20 angle grinder and power drill. All the info is in my norco dirt jumper thread in my sig, I don't want to spam Timmas thread too much.

Welders, milling machines and CNCs are awesome if you have access to them but this thread along with Aussie Jesters are a testament to what can be achieved with basic tools if you have the time, patience and a bit of skill

Did not mean to get all Hub vs chain drive on you guys (was having a stellar day earlier) What I should have said was with all the hubs I tried they were fun and quiet. Once I pushed them on hills or long flats ( up to 40MPH) I would just burn them up.

I have yet to see or have a hub motor with enough torque to wheelie.

Hyena would love to know the set up for the wheelie!

The chain drive I wheelie it up hills, top speed around 35 (plenty fast in the dirt) and yet to burn it up after three months of use.

I built mine with some help from friends, basic tools, and renting a guy for two hours to weld stuff up for me. The hub builds I knocked out in three hours. . So yes the hub "builds" are nice. The chain drive builds IMHO are truly BUILDS.

At the end or the day I would be stoked just to see a mountain bike build out on the trial no matter what the kind of build it was!!!

DO NOT STOP BUILDING THE GARAGE CREATIONS. REMEMBER WHAT STEVE JOBS AND BILL GATES DID FROM THE GARAGE!!!!

Ok Paul...now i have the bike on the road again if your in the area drop in for a ride beforez i breakz it again hahaha and hurry the freak up
getting the Norco operational so we can go for a cruiser :D

To be fair to the hub motor boys, i have seen a youtube vid of a guy pulling a looooooong wheelie at about 30kph on a hub motor. He was pedalling a bit but more to help keep on the balance point by the look of it... wish i could pop long monos like that!

Popping a wheelie and sustaining a wheelie are two different things. Popping a wheelie requires far more torque than the latter.

(Power wheelies, not weight wheelies. :) )

No more powdercoating!!! Either clear coat that thing or anodize it, powdercoating will cover up all the beautiful work you have put in. Can't wait to see a proper video, maybe one of you and AJ drag racing!!

Have you considered implementing some sort of shock load reduction at the gear box input? Maybe a slipper clutch or something? Imagine your GTR with no clutch to smooth out torque spikes. Your transmission wouldn't live long. I built a 600hp Talon long time ago and didn't have any drive train issues, even at that power level, until I wore the stock clutch out. When I upgraded to the racing clutch, I had to be MUCH more careful or serious drive train damage would happen. I went through 3 transmissions, 2 rear diffs, and a few CV's in one summer. Just trying to put things in perspective. I think that high power ebikes need some mechanical torque limiting at the first stage. This will allow for smoother take off but still have the power available for high speed.

Your bike is flat out the coolest electric MTB I've seen so far. I would love to see you get it fine tuned and make some real offroad vids.

If you're shopping for a TIG still, look into Longevity welders. I got a 160 amp tig /plasma cutter for about $1300. I haven't fired it up yet but construction and part quality is top notch.

hehehe absolutely

I lowered the ratio on mine Paul, using same pitch belt on final drive no probs so far, i have sprockets
from Matt on route will be here any day will raise the raitio slightly and allow chain on final drive when needed ;)

Shall catch up soon anywayz matey

I like the build it/break it/rebuild it philosophy. I was thinking about electronically, "softening the hit", as you put it but there's some little part of me that thinks a mechanical backup would provide a little more punch and drive train security. Meaning you could leave the throttle settings so you could still accelerate quickly once moving, but the mechanical device will prevent shocks from a dead stop and big drop shock loads.

That welder looks almost exactly like the one I mentioned.

You are a lucky dog! You scored the long packs! I gave up on those ever coming back in stock a loong time ago.

Timma...that TIG is exact job i was looking at buying month or so ago! The have an Agent in Cannigvale
nice looking unit.

No the cruiser is again non mobile mate, i ripped the motor from it yesterday swapped the new sprockets in on the reduction drive recumpence sent me and also am in the process of getting the hall sensors working, made up a mounting plate and hall sensor bracket thingo yesterday. The sprockets Mr Recumpence SiR sent though are of most interest to me or rather what the top speed will now be. It will be higher....ALOT higher hehehe...

Hope the flu passess soon i had my shots last week for the cold and flu season :)

KiM

p.s and yes there will be a substantial increase in power hence the full chain drive setup...

Nice job on the sensor mounting for the HXT! A lot cleaner than our PC board mounts and nicer looking than Thud's.

Quick updqate as its after midnight and i'm buggered Zzzz but...

Its alive! :D :D I rebuilt the gearbox with a new output shaft and carrier along with a better outboard bearing setup and the circlip in place on the output shaft, left it set on 100amps max and...
Holy crap!!! The torque with an 8150, 100amps and 47:1 reduction is crazy! It pulls wheelies with the slightest of throttle movement, especially from a standstill! To the point where it is hard to take off without lofting the front wheel i kid you not! I am absolutely stoked!!!!!

We had two mates over tonight and the reaction was interesting. It scared the crap out of one and the other was seeing how far he could wheelie it in my backyard saying "build me one! build me one!" Yeah i think he's been converted lol. If my brother is home tomorrow arvo, we'll try to shoot some street action

And after all these backyard wheelies and general hooning for about half an hour with next to no pedalling, the motor was barely warm and the gearbox/belt/chains ran sweetly :D
Pack voltage start: 49.5v, end of hoon: 47.5v.

*Edit -sorry Kim, i hit send before replying to ya! its late...

Thats a bloody neat job on the bracket, i like your work quality! Its more reason to get up there and see the cruiser in the flesh! Soon i hope :)

Yeah i bought it from West Oz Industrial Supplies in Canningvale, not far from the Roe Hwy. Its probably the same mob, they have an ebay shop as well with the brand name Weld Smart.

Hey mate, about that drag race...

I'm off for Zzzz's

Paul :D

Vid! Vid! Viddddd! Please :D

This post makes my mounth waterrr  (I wasn't online much at this forum, but last week I finally finished my Losi LST, so now I've got enough time + money to finally convert my bike)

With a 47:1 ratio and a short wheel base will be interesting to see if you can
match the cruiser if your popping wheelies with a slightest touch of the
throttle, the cruisers front stays on the road (just :p )
under full power take offs  I also have new sprockets here from Mr R that
will increase my top end substantially keen to try these should be good for ~80 clicks now...
I have zero belt slip now so no excuses for babying it off the line either Paul :p ... We shall test this theory
though for sure ;) Ordering HV160 off Matt tomorrow (payday  ) and a Throtilizer
from EVLogix...i am having issues with one or both of the units i have here atm... Then i'll be good to go
Matt.P is also back up and running on his cruiser so we should all be good in a week or so
to organise a run/meet up/photo session/

Any chance of a timed 0 to 30 mph run? Very cool work, glad to see you licked the carrier problem.

@Timma: yes, I know :) Don't you have more cars than only a Mini-T? I thought you said you had a few Associated's and Losi's a few months back?
On-Topic: How fast was that in the vid?

Its got a tooth ache lol. To be fair to the gearbox, it was bound to happen and i was just seeing how long it would put up with being fed waay over its quoted torque limit. Not long indeed!

Are the gears case hardened? I realise it says "Massive 0.8 module hardened steel gears with an 11.5mm face" on the Banebots website but skepticism for such a low cost gearbox leads me to believe its best to run a file across them and see if they score. If not hardened, it might be worth getting this done.

She's got nice speed to go with the sleek looks. Look forward to some offroad singletrack video.

Just to say that this is one of the most beautiful rc bike conversion . What really impressed me is , what you did to original frame and how you managed to get it to this level without ruining the design of bike . Great :D

shizer.
very quick Paul, one of the best builds i've seen thus far chap 8)

Should be a good combo, very adjustable between the pair of them :D

Yes i hope so...how are you finding the The Throttlizer and HV140 ?

Nice clip @ WOT to Paul :)
