Pedal Assist for a Tandem?

I recently got a Haibike MTB single with the new 350 watt Bosch BB drive system and LOVE it. The range with the PAS is excellent and the feel is natural.

I am planning to add an electric assist to one of my tandems and would very much like to have the PAS or Pedal Assist type of power control but have not been very successful in figuring how to do it or what products are available to facilitate doing it. I would very much appreciate any info or links, etc. on this.

I would also appreciate any guidance on which of the mid drive systems might work best for the tandem application. Due to the oversize eccentric front BB many of the preferred systems that are integrated - such as the Bafang BBS02 750W - can't be fitted. I also prefer a quiet system. I'm willing to spend $$ to get something that works well.

THANKS for any help you can provide.

PS: I don't think I need a great deal of power as my use for the system is to facilitate us OLD folks 70+ being able to keep up with younger fitter friends on group rides. So, range and efficiency is more important than brute power.

Interesting that you bring this up. I have been considering the exact same thing. However, I am considering powering a tandem tricycle because I notice my wife is starting to have a little balance problem. These bikes normally can be bought with a front wheel hub motor. But I'm a 100% mid-drive guy. So I a trying to get infor on how they make the connection between the 2 riders and back to the drive wheel. I'm assuming them are using freewheels so ether or both riders can peddle or not peddle. If this were the case a lot of mid-drives could be modified to mount. Even if it wasn't mounted in the normal manner.

I currently have a Bafang BBS02 500W on my own bike and love it. For me it has plenty of power and maxes out at just over 26mph of the flat. And it climbs hill like a mountain goat. The built in PAS works fairly well also. If I were going to convert one of the tandem tricycles I would use Bafang BBS02 750W and make what even mods needed to make it work. (I have a mill and lathe in my basement so no problem for me). The basket on the back is perfect for a big battery pack too.
