Planetary Reduction Drive

I was wondering if anybody knew the manufacturer of the cyclone planetary reduction drive or anything of similar size and reduction capacity. I'm working on installing a motor drive on my bike providing assist via the chainrings. I have access to a motor and I think this reduction drive will work nicely.

Thanks,
Doug

yep, they are made by headline (http://www.headline-motor.com) but i'm not sure they'll sell it to you direct. you can buy one from paco (cyclone taiwan). he has them in stock.

i'm also trying to adapt the cyclone gearbox for my HXT 130. it requires a 9T 12mm pinion input so i ordered one of these http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMGY1. haven't received it yet so don't know if it's a match. need to turn the shaft down to 5mm to fit this pinion. i'm making my own faceplate to mate the gearbox to motor. nice thing with the cyclone..you can use their 1-way roller bearing / fw adapter / dual freewheel out of the box.

i've also toyed around with the idea of using dual matex 75M series gears: http://matexgears.thomasnet.com/viewitems/all-categories/torque-range-45-300in--lbs-?&forward=1
more work and expense going this route with the benefit of higher torque rating (here's a cracked cyclone gearbox http://bushnell.homeip.net/~bill/bike/pictures/cyclone_motor/index.html)

finally, you could also try banebots p80: http://banebots.com/c/P80K-nnnn-0005. they are longer than the cyclones so it might be tough to fit motor + gearhead between the cranks (even with extended spindles).

anyone have any experience adapting the matex gears?

All,

Thanks for the info. It all was helpful. I had stumbled across the Matex site a few days ago and am planning to give them a ring. As my project moves forward I'll put up some posts.

That RC motor looks like a beast. I know they throw out some serious torque but don't they spin up pretty high? How many stages are you going to reduce that in?

Cheers,
Doug

I own this one.

If the motor burns up this summer I will attempt to replace the low quality Unite core with an RC motor.

All I would need is to find the right gear and get it attached to the RC motor and then figure out how to bolt it in place securely. The rpm range is roughly the same. (the motor gear just pokes through into the geardown portion)

So I'm kind of hoping I destroy my motor so that I can justify an early upgrade.

Gear Ratio: 88:9 (9.778)

Have you thought about using the guts out of a drill to accomplish the geardown. I was hoping someone would have tried it by now, the robot websites sell just the gearbox. One issue might be efficiency though. Most drills have 3 speeds which could be a plus, and with construction at a standstill one might be found lightly used for cheap.
