My old gopro shot AVI, and I did edtiting with el cheapo windows movie maker.

My new one shoots quicktime mp4, and being an apple thing, won't work on the movie maker. Not even on the 2011 version of it.

I get a message saying it doesn't have the codec, but no clue what codec to get or where.

A video converter would work, for $$. A free one was tried, but it converted the vid from 1080 to about 300.

Any suggestions that would be free? I'd like to stick with WMA if possible, since you tube seems to like that format.

Looks like download quicktime 7 pro would work. $29.

Have you tried Handbake Win version? http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php

I don't think YouTube cares much anymore what format since I believe they convert to a couple common ones anyway.

When I tried to download to the tube straight from the cam, it said the audio was going to be out of synch.

I try that download.

Here's another popular open source converter...

I've been messing with Video for few years and the more I learn the less I know...

I'd bet Uncle Ron probably has a few good tips for editing/encoding video?

I did a google search on "mp4 quicktime avi gopro conversion" and this came up:

This one looks good also:

along with a bunch of others.

im yet to edit any videos from my gopro hero... but i think its just the container that windows movie movie maker does not like.
try demuxing the streams and remuxing in avi without recompressing (so you do not lose quality)

something like mp4box, or yamb to demux
and avimuxgui to mux

its just a wild guess since i didnt try it myself

Trying streamclip, which may work. Thanks.

Last one I just tried only converted the vid to go on my ipod. Another made it into an audio track, another one from yesterday worked good but wanted $40. I was about to just say hug it, and buy Quicktime pro, but then the reviews made it sound funky. Funky is standard, but funky for money is forbidden. Many of the downloads you can look at never say if its' free or pay.

I was getting all frustrated, my test ride from yesterday included a dog trying to attack me which of course led to me attacking the dog back. Only wanted to put up the 5 min of dog fun, not the whole dang ride.

I think someone beat me to it but mpeg streamclip is a good free download for mac or mic, and I didn't think youtube is fussy about its formats much anymore

Thanks guys, stream clip worked for me. Hopefully without compromising vid quality. I was suprised you tube flagged a problem with the vid too. Even if it had gone ok, the download was going to take about 8 hours, then you'd have to see the whole boring ride.

Should have a new clip up tonight or tomorrow, with an amusing minuite or two of me scaring the shit out of a dog that tried to scare me.

If your not opposed to using software without paying for it (try before buy or whatever euphamism you like for stealing) a YouTube search for 'QuickTime pro' will net you the registration info you need to upgrade.

I like handbrake and ffmpeg123 ( really hard to find these days ) a lot.

However i have yet to find a simple video editor that will handle The H.264 format in 720p, and not output 480p or something that looks an awful lot like it.
