Hi,

I just got a 500w 48v bafang rear hub kit including a varstrom controller https://a.aliexpress.com/_EG6jgCS
and the driving is awful. Acceleration is way too sudden and strong, then the speed decreases by itself and reaccelerates. It's irregular and feels uncontrollable, very unpleasant. It's worse with the throttle, as 70% of it does nothing, and then suddenly it goes to full speed. No steady acceleration, no control, no smoothness. Also, the delay is too long after pedalling before motor starts. And the delays when switching between throttle and pedal sensor are also weird and long and unnatural.

1. Can this controller (9A normal, 18A peak) be programmed? I know the bafang mid drives can with a usb key and an app, but I remember reading that it may not work with hub motors. Is that true?

2. I'm thinking of buying a kt controller (with display) that is programmable to have a steady and smooth control on the motor's behavior both with pedalling and throttle.

Any advice, any info, any feedbacks from experience, anyone in a similar situation??

Did you try contacting the seller? According to the page you linked, they have responsive support and respond within 3 to 12 hours.
I tried and you can't directly contact them, it's like a live chat with someone who is not the seller

This is why i like aftermarket programmable controllers.
Zero of the motor kits i've received since 2011 were tuned correctly.
Either completely gimped out with the world's slowest slow start or tuned so aggressively that the motor will burn out in a short time, almost never see a controller tuned for a sane middle ground.

Non programmable controllers are junk.. with few exceptions.
Insert into trash and replace with a KT/VESC/phaserunner/baserunner..

I have the same problem with a front Bafang system and Varstrom display. E-HP explained the problem succinctly (see "Display"). Will this be neutralized with a Grin display, programmable controller or both?

What KT and VESC controllers can you recommend with displays? They need to be compatible with a bafang motor (9 pin plug).

You have to find the instruction manual for your LCD, then go through all the parameter settings. If I were to guess, I'd say that your speed sensor setting is incorrect. Often, these cheap controllers are pretty bad even when set incorrectly. The only controller I'd use on a kit is a KT because they have current control for the pedal assist settings and some other nice features.

VESC is great for high power builds when the look of the controller doesn't matter.. :)
I just use a standalone cycle analyst for now on mine.

I believe KT can use lots of displays. Never ran one myself, maybe another user could chip in.

The display isnthe bafang dcp18, it has no such features as setting currents or anything. It's very limited.
Which KT controllers compatible with bafang rear hub could you recommend?

The display on my system will allow only a Metric/US change in mph and associated readings (miles etc).
