Hi
we have a powabyke trike with a powered front wheel all original
But today the trike stopped, went through it as best i know and got to the front hub
i put 12v direct to the wires from the motor and nothing
So because i live in Bulgaria i cant pop down the shops
Is it easy to take the front hub apart??? what should i do
Can i get Brushes .are there any brushes I am an electric idiot so dont go technical on me
i see Phillips screws both side of the hub but where to start
Any help please

do you have a voltmeter yet? how many wires go to the hub motor? if you take a picture of your motor and the controller so we can see and read the labels it will help diagnose your problem.

but you should get a voltmeter if you do not have one. that is the only useful tool now. a screwdriver will just get stuff in pieces and won't tell what happened.

was there a spark on the wires when you decided to attach a 12V SLA pack to it? no movement of the motor at all?

They use brushless 250W motors. Check battery connections. Check battery voltage. Check all other wires and connections for something obvious.

My wife had a similar bike, it was fine for the first year then it started to give a reduced range from each charge. eventually cutting out only a couple of miles after being charged. It turned out to be badly out of balance cells, the higher ones stopped the charger and the lower ones tripped the bms lvc. Bringing the cells back into line with a single cell charger and then leaving it on the charger for a couple of hours after the green light comes on sorted it out. We had been taking it off charge when the light came on not knowing that the balancing was only just starting resulting in a badly balanced pack.

When ours cut out it would need to be connected to the charger to re-engage the bms so try this.

Hi many thanks for replies
Batteries are perfect
I have done a volt test on the throttle control ,i took the connector apart just before the motor and it shows power going to the motor,
Its a new throttle so thats ok.
2 wires come out of the motor ,red an black ,and it does nothing when i put 12v direct to it
i did notice a few weeks ago that the motor sounded slightly different
there are no speed limiters ,
Its a 5 speed powerbye cruiser
same as this on the link but 5 speed

i now have a manual to take apart the motor but to be told by someone who has done it is better than pictures ,i hope
hope that helps

Your link you posted says it's a 250W brushless motor, but if you only have 2 wires out of the motor, then the controller is either in the hub or it's not a brushless motor. Maybe it's an older model with a brushed motor, but to be honest I can only go by what I can see.

The older Powabyke motors are brushed. The new ones are brushless.

Here is what i have done
I found a really helpful man who sent me a repair manual for the hub, Frank Curran ,your a star
So i started taking it apart an noticed the 2 wires that go into the hub are twisted ,at first i thought it was a factory thing then saw one was broken
,ah ha problem solved ,not quite
Stripped it all down had new wires soldered onto the plate with the brushes ,but the twisted wires ???i cant work it out
so tried a 12v battery on the cables an all it does is click,
The part what the brushes push up against (is that an mature????) does not turn .is it suposed to turn freely???
so i put it all back on the bike but if i wheel the bike backwards the 2 wires that power the hub twist.
so i am stuffed now
have not got a clue why
the gears are grease and have no marks ,all look new
is the motor supposed to turn freely
now i am searching for a repair shop in the UK to send it

Turning the wheel by hand can be difficult. Is the wheel mounted in the forks and you are trying to turn by the rim?

Where in the uk are you? There are many to choose from. Also there is a uk forum with far more experience of these bikes that would be worth checking out at at the pedelecs forum.
