Re: The Best Waterproof Goretex Shoes?

I've worn Bates goretex lined military issue combat boots for years. The boots kept my feet warm at 10k feet in sub zero temps while working under a snowcat and they're reasonably comfortable in the summer too. If they last me five years the way I use them, they'll probably last an average person a lifetime. $40 at the surplus store

I'm covered for boots but they are not really suitable for cycling. Looking at Bates hiking shoes, they are quite high on the ankles which wouldn't aid pedalling.
I will certainly keep them in mind though when I eventually replace the hiking boots. Thanks Danny

I've probably pedaled 5000 miles in mine. The ones with the fabric sides don't constrict the ankles much but the soles are heavy. I even went out and bought some nice Shimano cycling shoes but after wearing them once, I'm back to the boots. I don't like to ride in low top shoes because all of the sand and rocks that get in there. Also, I tend to go fast over rocks and dab a lot.

Anyway, my wife was a die hard chuck taylor wearer and we got her some good boots. Now, if we're doing anything outdoors, the boots are automatic.

Best of luck in your search. It will be interesting to see what you come up with.

good if you have clip on pedals

theose seem to obsolete now, but I am sure they do a new version

Totally waterproof and breathable is tricky for shoes, especially in Ireland. I've found it best to go the traditional route - shoes that absorb as little moisture as possible and lots of holes to let it out again when it does get in. That, and plenty of stops to wring out your socks!

When it's really cold and wet I use waterproof spats (the kind that are open at the back and sole apart from the toe) or in an emergency, the old plastic-bag-over-the-socks trick. Goretex socks would be a hi-tech version of the latter, but I've never tried them.

gore tex is not the only or best fabric now. columbia sportswear bot the rights to an improved fabric i read recently, but cannot get it introduced because gore tex requires it's manufacturers to be exclusive and not use competing fabrics in their line up. there is an anti trust lawsuit in progress, worth checking into since shoes might be more competitive in that regard.

none of the shoes i work or use ever maintain a continuous surface anyway, they just wear out on the top of the toes within a few months. i wear out knee pads right away too. working.

The SPD. cleats are not fitted as standard, so without cleats, they are ok as normal boots too

These Bogs probably aren't what you're looking for but I love mine. Durable. They don't breath too well but since they slip on/off it's easy to take a foot at least part way out to get some air once in a while.

Never tried their shoe, but my Asolo boots are my favorites.
