I was thinking about a rear view mirror for my ebike. Most of the mirrors i found on the net and in stores didn´t satisfi me. So i made my own one... one for EBIKES :) What do yo think about it?

This is what happens when kids grow up with computers instead of technik blocks and mechano

:)

Simpler, lower cost, no power required

Reevu helmet

Thats clever, can it also record?

Even if your Reevu helmet gets stolen you can still watch your back

But i dont like the mirroring tft display. in sun you get problems seeing anything in it. a bright matt oled would be perfect.

Leaving the bike on the street, with camera and display, and taking the helmet with you, wanna bet which is stealed first?

Looks more like a rear view camera  . Must be very effective at night

i use rear view camera on my velomobile - but as an addition to 2 rear mirrors. It is cool!

On both my motorcycle and my bicycles, I prefer the Third Eye mirror, which plugs into the handlebar end.

Nice but I don't like it how it's mounted.
I have many crashes and end of the steering bars always hit the ground

So I am looking for nomal bar mounting :D

The way it's mounted is the reason I can use it to see behind me instead of only seeing my attractive torso.

Very nice but not cheap... i spend 30€ for the monitor, cam and battery.

Mirrors on the handlebar have on negative thing. your rear view depends on the angle when your looking in the mirror and the direction the handle bar is pointing. With the Cam your rear view is always the same direction

It is.. light of a car or a bike you will see, so i know if something is coming near and more i don´t need to see at night ;)

No not yet, but i wan´t to get a video grabber for it :).
Yes would be better but it would cost more than the tft.

Very nice display- holder, the cam is excellent but i would be looking in it to much and i would nail something in front :D .

Would an 18650 or something fit down most bars? I would have two such mirrors if they were also lights.

I'm already at 630mm wide. That's both grips and brake pulls. Wider than the barriers on national cycle route's. I would look like a car coming.

It depends on the bars. They range about 22mm down to 15mm I believe.

18650 might fit in some, but 14500 will fit in even more.

How exactly do those mount inside the bar? Is there a two piece expansion type barrel that wedges into the bar end? Do you know where to get spacers for use in a 7/8" diameter bar?

You can also use moped or motorcycle mirrors on most bicycle handlebars, by using an old seatpost clamp. I have pics and some details about that in my Dayglo Avenger and CrazyBike2 threads (the DGA thread is shorter and should be easier to find it in).

FWIW, I considered an electronic setup (before I got into ebikes, and pondered it afterward a few times), partly so I could record it, but several things made it impractical:

--no screen I could find (locally, used, mind you) was bright enough to be seen in direct sunlight *and* in total darkness.

--The closest I could find would require futzing around in menus to adjust screen brightness between day and night riding, or else be blinded by the screen and unable to see the road. (actually only one even had a knob for brightness, and it *might* have had 2:1 ratio at best).

--The cameras also tended to have problems working well in both situaitons, especially wiht contrast--when any really bright light source like a headlight would hit it in less than full sunlight, it would dim the whole output so much that you could ONLY see the headlight, making it useless to see all the other things in it's view. Some of them were so bad that only the brightest headlight would show up, and all the ohters would be dimmed out to nothingness, so if there were really bright lights *behind* some other, closer, vehicle, you coulnd't even see the closer one!

--power consumption of both cameras and screens was very high, and would have required as much or more power than all my automotive/motorcycle lighting, so would need it's own large battery for any decent length ride.

--if power failed for any reason, I owuldn't have a rearview mirror....and if i had a "manual backup" already installed, I woul dhave no need for the electronic one anyway. ;)

--Phoenix sun is very very intense in teh summer, and I have had numerous LCD devices permanently damaged by even a minute's exposure to direct sunlight in the middle of the day in summer, form the heat generated inside them by it I think--they sometimes recover partially, but are often much darker than they were before--permanent twisting of the crystals or something maybe. Either way, stuff gets reallly hot really fast and breaks. :( So far the Cycle Analyst has survived, but even one of those has a little darkening from repeated such exposures (unavoidable while riding, depending on time and angle of sun and direciton of ride, etc. ). Completely destroyed a PDA (used for Veloace) like that, once. :(

--Theft is a big problem...somtiems I'm surprised my bikes don't lose stuff off them when I hav eto leave them, but It hink people are probably afraid to touch CrazyBike2 half the time. But stuff has been stolen off my nicer looking bikes I used to keep (so now they're all fugly as it seems to help).

Nowadays I would bet that everything but the screen brightness in direct sunlight problem could be dealt with for a reasonable price...but the screen is still a problem, either in cost or in brightness (or in complexity of *changing* the brightness for day vs night).

But it does stll leave the sunlight-damage and theft and power problems

I'm waiting for a camera that will be compatible with Google Glass. That way it can just be a HUD.

Imagine the app that has speed, your wattage, wh/mi, voltage, current (basically all the CA display numbers) on a heads up display with a rear view as well. The future will be awesome!
