maybe it's just me, but I cannot unplug my JST connectors after they're plugged in. also they don't seem up to the task of being plugged and unplugged repeatedly.

anyway I want better plugs. I found these 7 pin connectors at a local electronics store and before I go to the trouble of soldering lots of small wires I'd ask if there is a better connector that I should use.

I do agree that JSTs arent' teh best connector for repetitive disconnects, but I haven't had any trouble unplugging them even when below freezing or when above 100F so far.

That connector looks ok, as long as you have something you can use on the male end to support the wires against vibration and give htem strain relief. They have that in the female end, by nature of the case, but the male end looks like it's just solder cups, and they might have the soldered ends fail eventually, with wires breaking off right where the solder wicks up into the wire a little and makes it brittle. Even if you have that male end mounted on the controller case, instead of hanging there on the end of a cable, it could still have that problem, but it'd probably be reduced.

They basically look like the 3-pin mini-XLR on some chargers I've got, and like the 5-pin mini-XLR I've seen on some motor/controller combos in various threads/etc. They'll work ok for halls, and can be made nearly waterproof (unless they're totally submerged or something, and maybe even then). It's just the strain relief issue that could present problems--the chargers have had broken wires on them at the connectors because of that.

thanks AW, I'll probably mount the male connectors in the side or bottom of my battery box. I could also glob some hot glue on there to protect the wires :D

Maybe these would work?

I'm using those very Molex connectors on my split Ping BMS wires and they are pretty good . They are fairly tight but easier to unplug than JST connectors and RS has the tool that works on both male and female connectors in case a wire pulls out. I use a standard crimper and a bit of patience to crimp the wires and I am using 18Ga soldered to the Ping 22 Ga wires. My wires are about 20" and I have had no problems in well over a year with this system.
