Hi,

I'm trying to order rims for my BMC hub motor. Was looking at www.niagaracycle.com

Some rims are listed with say 26 x 1.5 or 26 x 2". How is the 1.5 and 2 interpreted? Obviously not rim width, but hopefully related to it.

Basically I plan to run Schwalbe Big Apple, 26 x 2.35, so I wanted a pretty wide rim, and obviously strong. Niagara has the schwalbes for only $33, and shipping is reasonable. I was hoping to buy the rim there also.

Sun Rhyno rims are mentioned a lot on ES. I'm guessing the XL ones would be slightly higher grade. Didnt see XL's in 36h at Niagra unfortunately.

www.niagaracycle.com has these:
Sun Alloy Rim 26 x 2.00 Ryno Lite Black 36 Hole $28
Sun Alloy Rim 26 x 2.0 BFR Mammoth With Strip 36 Hole $35
Sun EQ31 26", 36h PV Disc Rim, 559 ISO, Black $50

The last is a disc rim which is ok. I hope to keep the rear disk brake.

Which one would you recommend?
Any others?

I'm also going to be in the MD/DC area (Baltimore and College Park visiting some shool friends) in two weeks so you know of a bike store with good prices and selection I could pick up a rim then.

Thanks,
Martin

Hi Martin,

The 26x1.5 or 26x2 are the dimensions of the rim in inches so the 1.5 is 1.5" wide and the 2 is 2" wide.

I have the Schwalbe Big Apple 26" tires on a medium wide rim that comes with the E-BikeKit hub motor and it works well. The main thing with the rim is that it needs to be double-walled and hopefully reinforced. The rims will be carrying a higher than normal weight and have to deal with more stress from being used with a motor.

You may want to invest in a disk brake setup as well. I've found that V or rim brakes wear out very quickly on my bike and so I'm switching to a disk brake system.

I live in MD and work near College Park. There are a couple of bike shops in College Park, but I have not used them. The ones I've visited were mom and pop type operations and weren't well organized. I've found REI and Performance bikes to have a larger selection.

The 1.5, or 2 refers to their recomended tire size, in inches. In other words, thats the ideal size tire(according to them) that can fit their rim. in the details of the rims I looked at there, they give the actual rim width as well. 30mm would be about right for a 2.35" wheel

Ended up ordering two 31mm wide rims from niagara cycle:
1 x Sun Single Track Disc Rim 26" 32 Hole Black (55645) = $34.99
1 x Sun EQ31 26", 36h PV Disc Rim, 559 ISO, Black (415634) = $62.40

Have used the Sun Single Track Disc before, so know it is ok. At least my old one is welded. Hope they haven't cheaped out lately.
Didn't find an inexpensive wide rim in 36h. Hope the $62 for the EQ 31 is worth it.
Next is to figure out spoke lengths between the BMC v2s and the EQ 31rim.

This is for the Jekyll build:

B.t.w. Found that the rims listed as 26x2" were generally about 27mm wide. Only found the Rhyno lite (non-XL) which is a pinned joint, and only 27mm also, so skipped that one although it would have been inexpensive ($28)
