I have been searching all day/night and haven't really found much pertaining to this subject. I would like to know what size tires to use on a 24" 23mm crystalyte rim from ebikes.com. I would like to use a 2.4" cyclops tire but will this rim be wide enough?

What kind of tires are you guys using for you 23mm crystalyte rim? 23mm seems to be very narrow. What would you guys suggest to be the best size width tire to use on this rim?

I'm also considering getting the larger width downhill rim 31mm however in the kit it will add an extra $100..

Please share your wheel width and tire width in this thread. It doesn't matter what size it is, this can be helpful info for me and anyone looking into building their first e-bike.. Thank you all

My kit came with 32mm rims, 25mm inside width. I run Cyclops tires and even those rims were way too narrow for my liking. I replaced them with 39mm, 32mm inside and couldn't be happier. Much better handling and control. I will never go back to a narrower rim. But I had a heck of of time finding the wider rims. In fact had to buy a wheel and strip the rim off it to get what I wanted. This is the rim I use.

Thanks bud. The more and more I think about this the 23mm rim is really to narrow of a rim to use a fatter tire on. I'm pretty sure the 23mm width they give on the ebikes website is the total width and not the inside width.

Why would they sell such a narrow tire?? It seems like it would be unsafe to use a wheel that small..

The more and more I think about it em3ev kit with the Mac 6turn motor and wide Alex wheel is looking better than the crystalyte hub and rubber band wheel

I just got an email from justin from ebikes.ca and it turns out the stock crystalyte rim is actually 29.5mm wide. That is a big difference than 23mm so that changes things up quite a bit. I just wanted to let anyone know that's thinking of getting this same kit. I'm gonna try either the Schwalbe Crazy Bob 24"x 2.35" or the CST Cyclops with it.. If I need a bigger rim I'll just have to lace it up myself. The stock crystalyte should be alright for the time being though

I'd go with a Maxxis Hookworm 24x2.5" or a Schwalbe Pick Up 24x2.35". Both are fairly heavy duty and should work well for an ebike :).

Don't overthink it! Historically, there isn't a strong correlation between rim width and tire width. But also: Don't underinflate it! The narrower the rim in relation to the tire, the more pressure it takes to keep it stable. So if you want to run your tires soft and poofy, use a wide rim like 40mm or so.

Should be good to go, I'm running similar right now, Crazy Bob 26x2.35 on 29mm wide rim. Handles great! The Crazy Bobs are a great cornering tire and have been holding up well along my severely potholed, waterlogged, railroad-tracked, glass-strewn, metal shard infested industrial routes.
