Rising motor 45 amp ebike kit dead, hard to spin

I have a fairly new 45 amp/2000 watt risun motor rear hub drive 24" kit, with what seemed like Regen braking, I don't believe it was a feature that was advertised with the kit, it worked like when I let off the throttle almost all the way, it would slow the bike and I'd see the voltage rise. Now I'm not sure if that was supposed to do that as it died out on me while I was using the "Regen feature" today. I've disconnected all but the 3 main phase wires, screen and everything was and is still dead, and the wheel is really hard to turn. Long push home lol.....

So I was wondering if anyone had any experience with risun motor kits, I found this kit on eBay advertised as 1500 watt, but the display reads up to 2000 and controller says 45 amps. I have about 200 miles/4 months/ no rain on the kit, and am surprised to find it dead so soon, I estimate over 6000 miles on my 1500 watt violamart ebike kit, 3 years with all original kit parts still working, ran hard and put away wet. I've contacted risun sun, but who knows, I don't expect much help from them, but I will update if they help me out or not, and when I get the chance to do some more troubleshooting.

Is the motor still hard to spin when you unplug it from the controller?

Ok, so I just disconnected the 3 main phase wires to the wheel, and the wheel spins normally. This would imply that the controller is fried, yes??

Yes. Controller is knackered. You could try transplanting new FETs into it for education or entertainment value, but the failure might well have taken out other stuff. The sure remedy is a new controller.

Yes you are right, I've already put a new controller on the bike, and it works. I've taken the blown controller apart, and cannot see any obvious blown components or issues. Still curious about risun motor, if they will replace the controller or not. I've updated them that it is a bad controller, but still have not heard back yet, though its only been a few hours. Their ebay listing does state a 1 year defect warranty...

You already know! Chinese company lol so naturally they bounced me around different agents, and just tried to sell me a new controller. They would not even speak to the "warranty", or replacing my dead controller. All they said is here is the controller you need with a link to buy listing, of course they no longer have my exact cheaper controller, so I'd have to come out my pocket to buy a new one with color display, and probably a new throttle, cause none of this stuff will plug and play together.

I currently have another setup, but i do miss the 45 amps, i only have 2 good 35 amp controllers at the moment. Anyone have any idea about my "regen braking" at maybe 1/8 throttle? Im thinking maybe my controller came with a bad mosfet or something, as if it was regen, it would have been sold as such.

You already know why they don't have the same controller anymore. Had an unwanted feature, failure.

right lol i just should of realized it sooner. i did just buy another complete 35 amp kit from ebikeling, with rim drive and all. looks great quality, havent installed yet but the controller shrunk in half size, which is awesome. now it could be rated smaller, but i think they did good :lol:

You probably figured out that Risun doesn't make anything, but put kits together from other manufacturers (Sabvoton, KT, etc.), so they won't be able to provide much support. If the controller was a KT controller, then that behavior is the same that I experienced when using a KT unit. In the region right above 1V, the controller acts like it has slide regen. Below that, the controller cuts out and allows coasting. I used a button that applied 1V min to the throttle signal wire, so I could use the slide regen feature without having it abruptly cutout after going below 1V, and it worked great. I still had brake lever actuated regen as well.

Are you using lead acid batteries or a Lithium Ion battery with BMS? Some controller manufacturers warn against using regen in situations where the BMS blocks the current from entering the battery, and voltage spikes, and mosfets get blown.

Luckily the test for blown mosfets looks pretty simple.
