Sandy shows vulnerability of electric vehicles

I live in NJ, 20min inland from the Asbury Park,Belmar,Spring Lake areas that are getting a lot of TV coverage. We were well advised early by the media to prepair for "Frankenstorm".We have 2 ICE vehicles,so we filled the gas tanks. After the 2 storms, there was a state of emergency,so we could not use the cars.Even later, there really was no point to go anywhere because the stores had no food, and the roads were blocked by fallen trees, power lines, flooding, utility workers, etc.Other preparedness was to fill a clean bathtub with water.Using a bucket, some of this clean water was used to wash hands, then flush the toilet.I have a Weber gas grill outside with a side burner, and keep 2 extra LP tanks filled. That is how we cooked. We have camping equipment, battery powered lights, radios,NOAA,that we used at night.Wood burning fireplace with a good supply of seasoned hardwood for heat.Never opened the refrigerator doors but had to throw most of the food out,but the one with the bottom freezer kept everythng frozen. I have a large area in the backyard that collects rainwater,so I put a 30 Gal Rubbermaid Roughneck trash can inside the bathroom. I used a 120 v submersable pump and a garden hose hooked up to my camping battery (w/built-in inverter) to fill it for flushing the toilet.( I have a well) I keep a 12v SLA truck battery around for jump starting, etc so I used this to recharge my camping equipment.I keep botteled water for drinking and cooking anyway.

Thanks for taking the time to post a response here. Most interesting to hear what you did in preparation, and that you seemed to come out the other side of this alive & well. This should be instructive to anyone on a coast that may be impacted by severe weather, as these extreme weather events, by science consensus and common experience, are projected to increase in both frequency and severity. Hope all continues to be well for you and your family in the face of this crisis. Best regards.
