Check out this article about Sanyo making next-gen hybrid car batteries:
http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/english/NEWS_EN/20080530/152674/
specifically the tech details at the bottom:
the battery unit is composed of about 80 cells. Thus, the unit voltage is expected to be approximately 300V, while the power capacity of the unit is estimated to be about 1.5kWh.

The battery cell for plug-in hybrids has a current capacity of 20Ah. After repeatedly charging/discharging the battery at a rate of 2C in an environment at 60°C with SOC set to 100-0%, the company discovered that the battery ensures a power retention ratio of 80% or higher and a capacity retention ratio of 70% or higher after 10,000 cycles.

Thus, the battery has a life of more than 20 years if it is recharged once a day

Strange they aren't shifting to LiFePo4 eh?

Seems like they keep fiddling with the chemical composition of the cathode and anode. It seems a little like Edison and the lightbulb, it took hundreds of random tests to see what worked. Eventually through a combination of luck, persistence and some intuition and understanding of materials they will get better and better.

It's one thing to "say" a battery will last 20 years... but it will take 20 years to prove it.

For some of us we will likely not even live to see the results of the test. (I'm 47 years old right now... so 67 is getting up there)

Very promising that's for sure. :)
