I just installed a set of Ice Spiker tires yesterday. They were a pain in the ass to get on and i snapped one plastic tire iron. Please note that I also found my hookworms and marathon plus tires a pain in the ass to get on. Maybe I'm just inefficient at changing tires.

Rocky Mountain Flow 1.0 hard tail bike with front 9 continent motor. So far I've ran the bike at 20amps 48V. The tires recommend a 20 KM light riding for the studs break in with out any hard braking etc. I was a little worried I'd rip all the studs out with 1000 watts going to the front, but all of them seem to have stayed intact so far.

I've tested them on dry/wet pavement and the traction is certainly acceptable at 40PSI. On pavement the tires sound like I'm riding on a loud gravel path, on dirt they just sound like regular tires. Hopefully it snows and gets icy this week, so i can find out how well these studs will pull me up the hill to work. I might try a duel motor setup if I can't get acceptable traction from the front wheel.

Thanks for posting! I actually have been lurking for a solution to get me through the depth of winter. I didn’t find a winter tire thread per se that summed up variations, though please allow me insert a link to the Rims and Tires Reference.

I found a pretty thorough winter tire guide online and posted the review in the General Information section. The Schwalbe Ice Spiker 26 x 2.10 Wire Tire decription is physically located at the bottom of this list – though is given very high marks. :)

Best, KF

Hey EL_WALTO, I just got back from my breakin test ride. 18 miles on dry pavement, you're right about the noise, sounds just like you're on gravel. The spikes must be set OK because I didn't loose any. The only thing I lost is top-end speed- about 10%. Before, on my schwinn with a 12s lipo I got about 28mph, now about 25mph. Oh well, if you're riding on a sheet of ice you probably wouldn't want to go any faster anyway. LET IT SNOW - LET IT SNOW - LET IT SNOW

sick. I have a set of the nokian extreme 296 tires. They're about the same cost and they're incredible.

Edit: fixed phone keyboard typos...

I have the Schwalbe Ice Spiker 54-559 (26 x 2.10) in the front with 304 spikes, for maximum grip on snow and ice where it counts in the front.
Super happy with tire it is soft, yes it does make a hum but I would rather have a hum and be safe than silence and ride at 10mph becuase it's too slippery to risk it.
I also have Nokian, Extreme 120, 54-559 (26 x 2.10) 120 spikes. I found that if your going to have spike tires the front is the most important. IMHO

Will be making a video soon just waiting until it warms up a bit. it is -14 celsius here in Stockholm Sweden

Neat Racer; sharp-looking bike! :)

I ended up ordering a pair of the Schwalbe Marathon Winter because my treks are mainly over icy urban roads. They arrived over the Turkeygobble holidaze; the plan is to install them this weekend. In closing, I am really impressed with the quality of the tire. They were about $78 USD each.

Spiked! KF

Ice SPiker Pro rules, they have 361 studs and if you look in Germany you can get them in 26 x 2.35. I just got a pair and for riding in winter in Calgary, they rule. They do suck up more juice but it is a small price to pay.

I blew out the sidewalls on one of my ice spikers by running it at a really low PSI. Sucks because i got 2 months of a $100 tire. I'm going to try to return it.

My front tire wore down after using it this winter. I lost all the studs out of the middle, but at least it's now hitting all the side ones. Might be OK for one more year. Still $200 on tires is a little crazy for a few months of riding.

Ice spiker , or ice spiker pro.. blah.
To really rip you need the nokian freddies revenz.

ps: expensive tires? just be glad you dont need them 5-6 months each year.

Sorry for the delay. I had them on the FWD Specialized Rockhopper and they were perfect because it would pull you through the frosty bits and black ice. I only used them in snow once when Redmond got a dusting of about 1 to 2 inches, and man was it a blast riding in the lane with cars not knowing how much control you had over them. It's like another world waiting to be exploited. Really quite happy with them.

Safe travels, KF
