Shimano Steps e8000 - Battery recommendations?

My friend has a new Yuba Mundo with Shimano Step e8000 motor and wants a larger battery.
Is he locked into a shimano motor/battery combo? Or can he go with a generic 36v battery?

Replacement of the locked battery may not be possible, but it's always possible to parallel another battery of the same voltage.
