Hi everyone,
Im Matt from the UK, just thought I'd share with you some pics/info on my bike conversion.
I have posted this because I was looking for a quick and simple way to make a descreet electric bike to commute to work on/have fun that didnt stand out like a sore thumb!! (but had no real luck finding such posts on the net...)
This bike only took me a few hours to build and anyone with basic bike knowlege could do it.
The bike I used was a Viking Targa DD24, a bike I purchased years ago for about £250 new
Several of the components needed uprating so below is a list of the replacement parts I bought:
Rock Shox Dart 2 Suspension Forks (eBay £45 9 months old)
DMR V12 Sealed Pedals (Chain Reaction Cycles £28 clearance 'Irish Green' lol)
Avid Elixir 1 Hydraulic Disc Brakes (£79 Chain Reaction Cycles - Can be bought £10 cheaper from China but I was In a hurry...)
Shimano 7 Speed Freewheel (£8 eBay).
I purchased my hub motor and accessories from Gary at http://www.goldenmotor.ca (cannot reccomend this site enough, excellent support/communication from Gary)
The parts I bought from there were:
Golden Motor Magic Pie III Rear (1000w+) with internal controller
48v 10ah Golden Motor Battery with charger
USB programming cable
This all came to around £700 including shipping to the UK (keep an eye out for vouchers from thier mailing list because I mised out on a free Cycle Analyst by ordering a week earlier :'( )
Everything went together pretty smooothly to be fair, the only real issue I had was fitting the rear disc brake properly without it binding. This was soon rectified with one washer on the L/H axle between the frame and the rotor and some m5 washers inbetween the hub motor and the disc

I am current not using torque arms on the rear but I have used Loctite on the nuts.... Time will tell hehe...
I mounted the battery in a modified hiking rucksack. I cut a small hole in the bottom of the rucksack for the power cable to exit then soldered some 30A Anderson PowerPole connectors to each end to make a quick release fitting that would detach if I fell off (inevitble judging by my performance riding downhill mtb) . The battery is secured internally with straps to stop it from flopping around. It sits nicely on my back and I barely notice it is there. Plus having it mounted in a rucksack gets you some awesome reactions when you fly past someone uphill on a seemingly normal bike!! 8)
I have GPS speed tested the bike briefly on flat land on a half charged battery and hit just over 27mph which I am quite pleased with (for now hehe) more than quick enough to beat the traffic to work.
