So, my 36v 15ah ping battery finally arrived. tested 39.2v. my first ride went beautifully. plugged the battery into pings charger & charger into wall (110v vancouver). lights immediately dipped & smoke pouring out the end where the fan is - WTF. Did I get a shitty charger ? I have one from the motor supplier - will it work ? has a blue & brown wire, while pings is blue & brown. If I plugged this charger in & tested polarity on the blue & red, will that work ? Has warning only to plug into wall if battery is connect ? Please help !! I don't want to fry my battery ! What should I do .......

!

Have you contacted ping?

Sometimes those chargers from China have the polarity the wrong way around, I test each one with a voltmeter before trying it out .

Spacey is right, I had it happen to a friend of mine recently. He bought a battery replacement for his ebike (enclosed aluminum box and all) but it would never charge. Same plug, should be just plug&play. Later he decided to try the battery as is and he got himself a blown BMS and motor controller. Battery had reverse polarity...

Ping will send you a new charger. Bummer, but it happens. I had one of my ping chargers go poof about the third use. He sent me another pretty quick.

You can use the other charger temporarily, provided it's the same nominal voltage. Even if it's a SLA charger, it won't hurt the battery provided you have the polarities correct.

you said the lights dimmed, but the circuit breaker did not switch off? is there any voltage on the charging plug if you still can plug it in? can you remove the screws under the rubber feet in the corners and take a picture of the inside of the charger?

I tested the battery, +39.2V, tested the charging wires from the battery +39.2V. Plugged the charger into the wall (no smoke), tested the output +44.9V, all polarity's appear to be correct.

the only thing i did differently was i connected the charger into a different outlet on the wall duplex ? Could just that one walloutlet have reverse pol ? Funny - I tested both on the duplex. either way i put the mmeter leads, it was always + 119.5V ??

To keep 'anyone' updated. Ping said all indications on voltages I emailed him showed everything seems okay, and that I should try charging the pack again ! Which I will do when I get home from work. But geez - what would make a charger smoke crazy & dipped the lights in the garage, and then ... suddenly everything is fine ?

Pure coincidence. You probably experienced a brown out exactly at the time you plugged your charger in?
:D :D :D

So it was just a brown out after all? Live for Physics next door just plugged in his charger at the same moment you did?
