I'm new to all this ebike thing but maybe you can give me some pointers.
I need a bike for a very specific purpose which is recovering the car (left at a hilltop take off) after flying a Hang Glider. The glider will be left at the Landing Zone after flying and picked up with the car later.

Task: pedal assistance to take a 72kg/160lb dude up a dirt trail (driveable by road car) that is usually 10km/7mi in lenght WITH a vertical climb of 1000m/3000ft.
Motor power is limited to 500watt (spanish regs)
I'm OK with pedalling (do not need a pure electric scooter) but want something that will let me keep a nice uphill speed without sweating myself silly.Main goal is to significantly cut down time.

Any tips about required motor/batt/drive combos that will do the trick?.
No sexy superbikes please, cheap, light and it would be extremely convenient if i could get away with a folding 20incher :) but i've never ridden one and i do not know if they can handle the climb and dirt trail (they are usually very decent trails, normal car useable).

PS: i will not fly with the bike of course ...it will be left chained at the Landing Zone on the way up .

Hi,

I used to do some hang gliding a while back, really miss it but can't do it where I live now.

You probably need to give a bit more information like what your budget is etc.

Seeing as you don't want to go that fast or far, almost any kit would do so it's difficult to be specific for you.

Personally I would go for Mac 12T, 9 Fet Controller and a '48V' 10Ah battery all of which you could get from em3ev.com, however, that could be more bike than you need but better to have it than not!

The reasoning being you're going up hill the whole way so you want a torque motor rather than speed, you want it light as possible so geared hub instead of direct drive.

If you wanted a folder with a small wheel, then you could use a Mac 10T instead.

Kudos

About the budget,600€ would be a nice limit.
I really like the BH Neo Volt Sport but at 2000€ a pop it is way out of reach...http://www.bhbikes.com/web/es/easy-motion-ebikes/por-tecnologia/neo/neo-volt-sport.html

From em3ev.com

Mac 10T Pick n Mix Kit with 30Amp controller plus 50V 10.25Ah battery = 568EUR

Postage on top of that.

Kudos

How heavy is your glider? 25kgs?

The beauty of the torque motors is that they can easily haul another 25kgs so if you had a bike trailer you could bring it up the hill with you!

Hmm..my packed hang glider is a 30kg/65lbs tube with a whopping lenght of 5.3m/16.7ft.
Negotiating a turn while trailing that on a bike could become comical very easily :) ,add incoming traffic for real fun.
Most importantly,it is not necessary at all.
Glider is pretty safe at the bottom LZ, such a big, unwieldy package deters most opportunists.

Yeah i did think it would be too long really, just wanted to point out you could haul the extra weight.

Did you take a look at my option yet?

I'll try to find a euro available kit with similar specs.Importing this stuff will probably be very expensive.
Thx!.

Shipping is not that bad actually and the prices from China are usually cheaper than euro shops.

If you check the site I mentioned doing a guest checkout it will calculate your shipping costs.

Good question!

If you ask around here, you will pretty much get the universal answer that rear wheel is better.

I've never used a front motor so can't answer that.

I would have thought though that if you were on good paved roads all the time a front motor would be OK, however, by the sound of it you have some bits of rough road to deal with, so rear motor it has to be.

Kudos

I was afraid it woud be so,slapping a front motored wheel and batt sounds a lot easier than fiddling with the rear bits(fiddly enough by themselves).
I'll go to a shop and get a couple test rides if possible. So many possible variations in this...
Thx a lot!.
