Sram's new , Eagle 12 speed drivetrain

Great news for any e-biker that wants to ..

1) Ride Offroad / Ride up Mountains.

2) Has a mountain bike that can only use up to a 46/48 tooth chainring ( meaning has limited chain ring clearance of the right side chain stay )

3) Wants less weight, and simplicity in regards to the drivetrain.

4) Wants to experiment with different front chain rings and cadence for the speeds they like to ride.

5) Wants to get rid of the front derailleur, and front shifter to make more room on the handlebar for displays, switches, etc.


Notice in the article that it uses a 10 tooth outer cog, that will be very useful for those of us that would like a mountain bike frame , but can not use
the larger road size cranksets up front.

This will be a great drivetrain for those smaller , not much power motors like the Q100. and similar weak motors.

( For anyone here who wants to bitch and moan , about the current progress, and improvements in bicycles , and who says they only need 7 gears , well just get your self a Mac motor, or other strong motor, since you are riding more like a moped anyway )

This 12 speed drive train is a great match for those low power hub motors , like the Q100 and Q128 . and the cassette , will fit onto the current 10/11 speed cassette freehubs.

The Best news about this new 12 speed set up , is , that now the 1x 11 speed drive trains are going to drop in price, and be standard on even cheaper and cheaper bikes.
right now the 1/11 speed drive train is available in 10-42 tooth cassettes which is great for us e-bikers, with its 10 tooth cog.

Yes it is too expensive for most of us there on ES,

However keep in mind, that other MFG's will soon make their own version , at a fraction of the price.

and also now the 10 speed and 11 speed components will go down in price, and will come standard on bikes as cheep as $ 600 ( there are already some 10 speed on bikes on sale/last year models for around that price, )

To make an example using Shimano ...
XTR is , and , has been expensive , so most people buy XT or just under, the same will happen within a few months for this 12 x 1 kind of hill climbing gearing , which by the way is also better for fast spinning electric motors.

I personally like this because this means the 11 speed components will drop down in price. I want to go with 1x11 anyway.

Admittedly, there have been rides on a stock Shimano 11 speed 1x group with the 11-42 cassette where I have wished for more range. But an 11-50t?

Right off the bat I was surprised at how well the whole system worked. Typically, my experience with cassette adapters have been that they worked, but not as well as a purpose built drivetrain. This may be the closest you can get at the moment to adaptive drivetrain perfection. The chain doesn’t hesitate up or down when shifting to the 18t or the 50t, and the somewhat normal B-tension adjustment seems to keep shifting relatively crisp. That isn’t to say that the performance is on par with SRAM’s XX1 or Shimano XTR, but it’s very, very good – as long as the production models offer a quieter ride in the 50t.

As for the usefulness of the 50t, it does take some getting used to. I really had to search for grades at my local trails where the 50t was needed – at which point it became more of a struggle to keep the rear tire from slipping. Because of that, I’ve already gone up a few teeth in the front (32 – 34) which provides more high end speed but still provides more low gearing as well. This seems to be the big payoff of the 50t – the ability to run bigger chainrings while still having enough of a low end to climb any hill that comes your way. Because of that, I have a feeling that 50t cassettes will have a lot of riders paying more attention to maximum chainring size on their frames in the near future.

So who is the ideal customer for the Shark? As an upgrade, the system makes a lot of sense for anyone wanting more range out of their current Shimano 11 speed 1x drivetrain (or anyone who may buy a complete bike with Shimano 1x in the near future). The Shark kit also seems like a real option for anyone trying to gain the widest range 1x drivetrain on a budget. SRAM has put out some mighty impressive 1x drivetrains at very attainable prices, but when it comes to absolute range the Shark has the 10-42 beat. And if/when SRAM does launch their 10-50t cassette, we have a feeling that it will be a good bit more expensive than a Shimano XT drivetrain with the OneUp Shark treatment.

So tell us, what motor @ what Voltage are you using?
 
For this 12 speed system, I have my eyes on the Future, The Future of Mid-Drives,

Right now the Befang BBS02, at 9.4 pounds , is a Boat Anchor.

I see a bright future where people will develop 2 pound and under , mid-drives , ( not including Controller another 1/2 pound , and the BB/Crank Which would be another 1. 8 to pounds for a BB30 Bearing Set/Crank Set with Chainrings )
Close to 3 pounds if you use the classic/ heavy Threaded BB and Crankset

So 4 to 4.5 pounds up to 5 to 5.5 pounds , including the motor/controller/BB Bearings/Crankset . Think about that !

High speed mid-drive motors using the larger cogs on the back of the 12 speed cassette when going up hills , and for slower speeds around pedestrians , and the smaller cogs when on the level/straight pavement.


Astro-Flight Type of motor, redesigned specifically for e-bikes ... Anyone here working on this ?
 
Actually not the , Astro Flight motor, I mention the Astro Flight above , just for a reference to the size and weight , of motor wanted for a mid drive, so that it can be bolted onto the frame and fit between the crank arms.

a small motor like the Astro Flight, ... with a bigger shaft, and wound for slower speeds, etc, that does not need the complex gear reduction .

Instead of taking a motor designed for RC Planes ( the Astro Flight ),

Custom Design one for Bicycles .

Not a high power/wattage motor , just a small motor for assist, about the same power spec's as the small Q100, and Q128 .
