Suggestions on strong 26" rims and spokes for 1000w hub motor

I got a very cool ebike about half a year ago. I had the time of my life on that thing.


About a month ago I transferred the conversion kit to a better bike with a suspension fork and went on some rougher trails with it. Note that the hub motor alone weighs about 7.5kg and the wheel was built in china with the cheapest possible components.

As you might expect I cracked the rim.



So I'm looking for a good rim and custom lenght spokes from a reputable company in EU (because of shipping). As the motor already weighs so much rim weight isn't a problem, I just want a very strong rim and spokes.

Looks like Alex Rims and others now do "ebike specific" rims; at a guess these are just stronger versions of their normal ones. if you're lucky you might just need to replace the rim; spokes might be the right length and resuable

The spokes are the cheapest crap you can get ans they are old and tired. I would rather get new actually good spokes

Ryde Andra 40 is an amazingly beefy rim that can take a lot of spoke tension. Not too expensive, either. It comes in versions drilled for 14 gauge and 12 gauge spokes, though the wheel will be more durable and reliable under heavy load with thinner spokes. 825 grams for 26" is pretty massive. Rated 1400N tension per spoke, the highest rating I've seen for bicycle rims.

Because you probably won't find double butted spokes in appropriate lengths, look for either 13-14ga (2.34-2.0mm) single butted spokes or straight 14ga (2.0mm) spokes.
Put washers under the heads if the hub holes are too big. Sapim spokes would be my first choice for either size.

It's important to avoid spokes that are too thick, because they aren't elastic enough to stay taut as the rim flexes under load. That not only causes spokes to unscrew, but it leaves sections of rim unsupported when they're under the heaviest loads.

Most of the rims Alex lists for e-bikes are older rim brake compatible MTB, hybrid, and touring models that are proven, but in no way "e-bike specific". In my observation, there isn't really such a thing.

That said, Alex DM24 is one of my favorite rims for almost any heavy duty application.

I live in Ireland (EU) and no problem buying Ryde rims when they are in stock which is not always the case. I have bought rims and spokes from bike24 on a number of occasions but there are other suppliers.
