The age of cheap Chinese stuff is ending in the USA? [includes politics, but shouldn't]

Cool, still time to buy things w/o getting taxed on em?

Anyone getting hit with tarriffs so far?

100% tariff on Chinese cars. Would like to know if they're any good. The article I read had the Australian husband ready to drop money on a Chinese electric truck after drivings his wife;s BYD.
I really want that GAC/Toyota Bz3x for $15k!

Look up the definition of hyperinflation and see if what you're projecting matches the definition.

We import approx 15% of the food in the USA. Part of that 15% is about to get 25% more expensive.
It's possible to change sourcing and soak up some of that price increase within a year.

We import 41% of our electronics from China; that's the part that's really going to hurt.
It will take years to soak up that cost increase by sourcing from other countries.

We import ~25% of our steel/aluminum from affected countries.
..that's also on the difficult side.

I predict that the pain level will be similar or lesser than the inflation and price gouging we saw in 2020-2022 when the government was printing craptons of money and paying people to stay home instead of produce things.

Companies have a zillion possible moves to reduce the impact of tarriffs. I would expect a short term increase on prices, with a gradual leveling off.
Only 15% of our food, is imported... but sixty percent of our fresh fruit and thirty five percent of our fresh veggies is imported. Mostly from Mexico , but also other south american countries, and a bit from other sources.

But it's going to cost the farmers at least 25 % more to grow that food that goes to the consumer do the math

First whiskey I ever tasted was Canadian Club, Second was Jack Daniels. Haven't touched the stuff in many years other than a taste of Scotch a year ago, Looks like a whiskey war is a brewing.

A girly Gin and Tonic for me.

50% tariff on Alumiun. My My, I am thinking of buying a TSDZ2B for a spare while the price is still $275 shipped.

I can only speak for myself, but I'm sure I'm not alone in that I eat whatever wholesome foods are cheapest to buy, because I don't have slack in my budget for luxuries. As an example, I don't eat eggs often anymore, though they were a near-daily staple for me at other times. I didn't used to eat much beef, but now I never do. All the fruits and veggies I used to eat, that now cost $2/pound or more, have fallen out of rotation. For variety, I make up with seasonings and cooking techniques what I've lost in number of ingredients.

I eat as well as ever now due to attentive and resourceful cooking, but I'm bracing for even my stripped-down food selection to get tighter and more expensive yet. I'm hoping most MAGA chuds are less resourceful and capable (which seems like a very good bet), so they can choose between eating garbage or going broke trying not to. They've earned it.

Please keep divisive rhetoric like that last paragraph off of this thread. I will delete future comments like that. I'm very tired of telling certain people to stop doing that.

It's kind of crazy to see Canada and China having a trade war with each other also lately.
Every nation wants an excuse to collect more tax revenue while the economy is down. Otherwise, they cannot operate.
I doubt anyone is safe, globally, from even higher costs on most things ( in addition to the covid era inflation )

Times are going to suck for a few years for everyone i think.

Basically with the government debt problem it's either do this to us or sprint money like mad like they did in the late 2000's - early 2010's. It's not valuable to finger point, it's essential to adapt.

You want to keep divisive rhetoric out (which I agree to), but here you do it yourself in a way from my point of view:
What Trump is doing currently is not comparable to anything or anyone in western history (post WW2). He is not ‘just like anyone else trying to increase Tax revenue. That is really belitteling the chaos he brings currently to the world.
Sorry. I could not leave your statement standing like this.

Well, i could care less who is putting on the tarrifs but i'm saying it's the thing du jour lately and governments either need to do that or print money during downtimes like this, so pick your poison as to how you as a citizen are going to suffer.

Just read about the economics of past recessions.
I don't understand why that's divisive, sorry.

Actually this is not totally true, in the last decade there's been lots of tarriff and sanction action all over. Global trade is just breaking down. I could cite tons of sources from different countries. Who is worse or better at it is beside the point.

I mean to say, tarrifs seem to be the thing du jour lately, Canada and other countries are getting in on the action and it seems to be infectious, i don't see what exactly is divisive about that. Please help me understand what you mean.
What I tried to say is that your statement reads to me like ‘See - everyone is doing it. Not only Trump’. And that is not the case, as what Trump is doing (esp in the erratic fashion he is doing it) is on a different scale.
But I will stop here, I want to respect the forum rules.

Sorry i didn't mean to imply that at all.
Our last president also ratcheted up things on China in a really big way in his last 6 months.
USA has also been throwing tarrifs on things from Canada left and right over the last decade.
Yes our current president is ratcheting it up maybe exponentially and that's true. but i'm not leaving him out. That would be a logically strange move. :)

End of the day i just don't want a partisan flame war breaking out like it did during 2020. That's why i kind of have to be a **** on here. Sorry i have to!

Okay, just shut down 2 posts in a row.
Clearly you guys can't help but politicize and start talking about personalities over the

I'm extremely disappointed, this reminded me of the fight we had with conservatives on the website last election when they decided to spray their feelings about the loss everywhere they could. Same persistent behavior, different party. Resulted in a ton of bans.

Thread locked indefinitely because the signal to noise ratio is not going to work out. I'm tired of repeating myself and trying to keep it off a discussion of broader politics. I have stated what our rules on politics are dozens of times. It's not worth letting go on further.
