The age of cheap Chinese stuff is ending in the USA? [includes politics, but shouldn't]

I guess my expectation was, for someone trying to avoid those discussions, was that any subforum, other than the ones designated for those discussions, should be a safe place to have EV related discussions. I guess the “EV Business World” subforum is another one to avoid? Maybe editing the subject of the threads that go bad, to insert a note: “includes politics” or something like that would help folks to not accidentally read what otherwise looks like a normal thread. That way they don’t win, but helps others avoid all the crap.

I agree with it, i'll take the half step. Retitled.

I ordered a Fardriver 961800HR controller from SIAEcosys on AliExpress, and they lowered the declared value below $800 for me just in case (their idea) and I didn't end up paying any duty taxes or tariffs it would seem. Just picked it up from a DHL service point. Didn't even get held up in customs

Got to say when deciding on where to source anything likely to incur VAT/Duty on import the support provided by North American Sellers for foreign tax and revenue collectors is both impressive and decisive in many cases,
"Machine Parts" is so much simpler to write than a meticulously detailed list guys.. hashtag GRIN

Grin would probably listen to you if you told them how it should be done in the EU.
They might not know simply because few EU people order from there.

Dealing with intra-governmental issues is really hard for a company. I spent about 3 days trying to get an employee of a company a computer in Greece. I had no idea of this ahead of time and we had to come up with some new processes just to handle that case.

What can be said for politics and the lust of power....

So was it Confucius who said "When there is a large group of people never underestimate the power of the stupid people" ? 🤔

Maybe it was somebody else who said that.

Some bad news in..
https://www.politico.com/news/2025/02/24/trump-canada-mexico-tariffs-take-effect-next-week-00205795

President Donald Trump indicated on Monday that he intends to go ahead with plans to impose a 25 percent tariff on all Canadian and Mexican goods beginning early next week.

“The tariffs are going forward on time, on schedule,” Trump said at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, who is in Washington for talks on Ukraine and other matters.

If you're in the states and you're thinking about buying something from a certain Canadian company.. you have about 4 days to do it before the tax hits.

This is a thread in EV Business world about the impacts and motions of tarriffs and how they will affect things.

This thread is not for commentary about how you feel about who is in power, the nature of democracy, and other tangents which readily start a political argument. Those are all things outside of our control and not relevant to how we as consumers and business people will navigate the new legal environment.

Please save this kind of commentary for another website or another thread.

As far as the political goes it appears that China will get off easy and the EU will get hammered.

Hammered in what way? are you referring to the USA's 25% steel/aluminum tarriffs, which will affect the EU?
Or is there more..

Okay then, that sounds like you are speculating things will worsen for tarriffs somehow, but don't have anything concrete, correct?

Okay, here's the hammering you were referring to.. many headlines today:

Last month the EU put a bunch of tarriffs on Russia.. and before that.. lots of economic blacklisting over wars and such. And US has been doing the same.

What i don't get is the relation to tarriffs to the UN vote.. please explain

I see. I knew the government was going to do that, just didn't know when.
But yes okay, it could worsen the trade war which is relevant and something to look for.

Back to US-China..

Tech companies in hot water due to their large amount of Chinese manufacturing.. more than a few are responding by moving to the US or elsewhere..

Asian companies are moving production out of China.. even Chinese based ones..

Lots of indications that if you are in the USA, you'll be seeing a lot more 'made in Mexico' and 'made in Indonesia' soon.

As long as I am near ground zero. Quick and painless. And as far as the constant complaint about "politics" in this thread, it really is impossible to separate that out from the policies and effects since politics is the root of it all. The real problem we face is the absurd manufactured chaos and unpredictability of the current situation. Who's on first, which way is up, which way is down? Who are our real friends, who are our real foes?? And whatever we decide it is, it could all reverse tomorrow. LOL. And as gromike noted above, any trade war is really minor as compared to what could be coming as we shamefully abandon our allies.

I say we just launch the nukes, we're far to dumb as a species to continue this merrygoround and hope anything worthwhile comes from it.

Yeah, i'm asking people to just talk about what's happening legally and business wise and leave political commentary about the broader part out as much as possible.

Because, with consistency, when we start talking about broader issues, the topic is very quickly derailed and starts to turn into partisan squabbling, which then makes this thread useless as a vehicle to discuss tarriffs, what their impact would be, and what direction they're headed.

And the other problem we have is that many years ago a certain unnamed party coined the phrase "everything is political" and has successfully pursued that strategy for those decades and instilled this as an alternative fact. So here we are now considering what really are some totally non-partisan concepts to be "partisan" and they can't even be discussed in the context of our core values and founding. The only consideration is that since one party general behaves a certain way and the other doesn't that any discussion is, therefore, partisan. Something as simple as breaking federal laws. It simply boggles the mind.

IMO, this stuff isn't political so much as cultural... with some intersection with religion, racism and god knows what else. I have come to have zero tolerance as I told my brother when I "divorced" and disowned him. Life is too short.

People's lack of objectivity on these matters x current high running emotions means that we need to moderate solely based on what tangentially related things could potentially be divisive and create a flame war, which means we basically have to ban more people for refusing to follow moderator's requests, if we let the topic become significantly derailed, which we don't want to do.

That's why the focus needs to be narrow.

So stop inserting them into the discussion, like you just did for the third time now.

Despite my own failures in this regard, this is a forum about electric vehicles, particularly bicycles, and this thread is about the effect of tariffs (a concrete action that affects prices) on buying electric bicycle parts.
There are other forums to discuss the social and political issues about this.
But this is the thread for discussing the issue of buying electric bicycle parts. And that's true even if I did screw up about that in the past.
For that reason, the moderators are attempting to keep the thread clear about being only about buying electric bicycle parts - what strategies to get them, tricks, sources, emerging issues with previous sources. Just electric bicycle parts.
