The Greatest Story Ever Told

I'm tickled to say that I'm with Bob, phil-wise. And I am a genuine member of the Landover Baptist Church!

It's a fun, liberal place! What do I win? Eternal freedom from consciousness.

OK, Sorry....I'm bad....Edit

Don't be fooled by the elution that all is good. Our own government is out to get us, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCUe61hmqsA, .

911 was a conspiracy by our own government, for the purpose of enacting the Patriot Act,(and war to make money), which by it's self takes away our rights. But...it is only a preface to what is yet to come...

BEAR ARM FOLKS.... BEFORE YOU CAN'T!!!

if you are referring to your own post, you will have to look inward and try to understand why you are so upset with others exchanging ideas. we have common interests in electric vehicles, and we may have other common interests that do not interest you personally. what is so difficult to accept about that? this is a section for general discussion. if you want to limit the discussion to other topics just avoid this section.

I'm sure when my brain power declines with age and my chance of dying in a given year rises to perceivably high levels, I'll probably give in too.

i'm not sure exactly where our philosophies cross, but it certainly has nothing to do with church. i am a genuine member of no church at all, though i have been a recovering catholic for about 40 years. i believe religion has been behind many of the greatest evils of our time.

Hey it works in Japan,

Lithium in water 'curbs suicide'

Drinking water which contains the element lithium may reduce the risk of suicide, a Japanese study suggests.

Researchers examined levels of lithium in drinking water and suicide rates in the prefecture of Oita, which has a population of more than one million.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8025454.stm

Greg

i have seen estimates in psychiatric journals that up to 10% of americans may be bipolar to some degree, and since lithium is the treatment of choice, putting it in the water would seem likely to reduce many psychiatric problems that could lead to suicide. we put flouride in water to prevent tooth decay, why not lithium to prevent suicide?

Go back and look at your soft drink history,
7Up used to have (I believe it was) lithium http://www.snopes.com/business/names/7up.asp
and coke ahd well....http://www.snopes.com/cokelore/cocaine.asp

lithium in awater reducing suicudes isn't a surprise.

For those of you unfamiliar with Reid's "Church" I would highly recommend you scope out the Church's online clothing catalog.

The Landover forums can be entertaining, but satirizing fundamentalists is for lazy people. Most of the time you don't have to do anything at all to make them look ridiculous. They do all the work for you.

Son! Jesus died for you at the tender age of about 32!
It is never too early to realize that God kills everyone and everything, other than some mushrooms and protozoa.

certainly i was not angered or upset by reid's or anyone else's posts. i did take a quick look at his church webpage and could quickly see there was a fair amount of satire built in, but it is just not the kind of thing that entertains or interests me. that's fine, to each his own.

i was schooled first by nuns and then by jesuits, and while they provided me with a vastly superior education, they also used their system of guilt motivation and fear of recrimination and ridicule to imprint my young brain with a lot of dogmatic garbage. fortunately for me, i came of age in the 60's and was exposed to the chemical antidote to their efforts. "the greatest story ever told" goes like this:

Moses came riding up on a guitar
His spurs were a-jingling, the door was ajar
His buckle was silver, his manner was bold
I asked him to come on in out of the cold
His brain was boiling, his reason was spent
He said if nothing was borrowed then nothing was lent
I asked him for mercy, he gave me a gun
Said Now n'again these things just got to be done

Abraham and Isaac
sitting on a fence
You'd get right to work
if you had any sense
Y'know the one thing we need
is a left-hand monkey wrench

Gideon come in with his eyes on the floor
Says: Y'ain't got a hinge, you can't close the door
Moses stood up a full six foot ten
Says: You can't close the door when the wall's caved in
I asked him for water, he poured me some wine
We finished the bottle then broke into mine
You get what you come for, you're ready to go
It's one in ten thousand just come for the show

Abraham and Isaac
Digging on a well
Mama come quick
with the water witch spell
Cool clear water
where you can't never tell

Most of the Church members were raised as decent Christians. I was raised as a decent atheist: never heard a word for or against organized religion. I simply had zero interest in The Way. It's not in me. I worry about nothing at all and fear no man.

And I help strangers whenever possible. I live as much as possible as Christ would advise.
Uh oh. Read Matthew 10:34, good Christian members.

Yrs. in Christ,

Reid (who also did the LSD thing back in the late sixties. Clearly brain damaged

I worry about nothing at all
I worry about being homeless, penniless and most of all, alone. My lover is over 78 and not in good health.

The garage door is open (I live, practically, in the shop here), the ebike is running-in its battery, the computer plays music;
sunny, green-reflected light filters in through the open garage door. Parrots squawk in the oak tree. The outdoor cat meows for food. The yard men next door are cutting grass. Life is green for now. I worry only about getting ill or alone, yet, accept that both things will happen in time, and then I will die....with no regrets nor fear at all.

yep our philosophies are quite similar. i do not think it is particularly important whether i believe in a higher power; i would behave the same either way. brain-damaged as i am, the difference between right and wrong still seems fairly obvious. i don't need the fear of hell to convince me the world will be a better place if i follow my conscience.

What a great board this is - I can probably count on one hand the number of places on the internet that an interesting, respectful, open discussion like this could happen without degenerating into hatred of various kinds. Reid, Bob, you're both stand-up guys with your heads on straight, and I think what you're both saying about religion (albeit with slightly different methods) is spot-on.

Aw shucks. You shoon't have said that. your heads on straight

See, I'm a faggot, meant in the nice way, as Groucho Marx would have put it.
I was born in 1954. It was a dark night! A tremendous wind was blowing. No,
it was not a Miami hurricane. It was my mother. :)

My favorite Groucho. I take him in small doses.

You know The Cocoanuts? That's my hometown.
You know Lydia? She's my hometown too!

I slept,pain pill, pulled tooth yesterday (thank god it wasn't a hemmoroid again;
woke up, read this thread's new inputs. And I cry because I'm so happy.

The ebike continues whirring on its stand. Its joints, aside from the headstock bearings, are all sealed now;
it's ready to take, like me, with me, a flying leap into the unknown waters of flate. That's not a typo, folks;
it's an "out" for us chickens.

Haha, well played. I was just trying to compliment you guys - whatever you do on your own time is fine by me  and far be it from me to change my thoughts about, or actions towards, anyone based on their sexuality.

Swing and a miss - I'm not gay, I am just a "supporter" and a staunch believer in the freedom to do whatever it is you enjoy (as long as it doesn't impinge upon the similar rights of others, natch), and along with that comes the right to be with whomever you choose. Really enjoying the "talkie" clips, btw :)

Idea. I've hijacked the thread. Let's return now to page one, post one.

The thread starter is an absolutely honest, stand-up Christian, as are so many of that faith.

I think it's time to lay back and respect his views, insofar as.... I am full of horsefeathers too.

Seriously, let's never get serious here. No one influenced or made my sexuality. I was never abused.

However, I have been moderated and even banned for over the top humor that some people can't understand.

Do you understand me? That I'm different than the others? Now, I love women and Christians, both, but in different ways.

Well put, Reid.

I wouldn't want the original poster or anyone else to confuse my rant about fundamentalists with Christians in general. Religion is a very rich part of human culture. I think a deep study of any religion raises many interesting questions, and a deep study of two or more religions raises some even more interesting questions. Religious texts are rich in metaphor, which, unfortunately, some people don't understand. Religious texts also contain historical biases and other baggage of primitive societies. Many fundamentalists think they have all the answers, or that their favorite holy man has all the answers. I have little patience for churches, and no patience for anyone who claims to know all the answers to life, the Universe, and everything. But a good Christian who has more questions than answers, an open heart and a seeking mind, who listens more than speaks, there's someone I can respect.

Agree with Jules 100%.

I would also add that most rational atheists are, at some level, open to the possibility of a supreme power, because they could imagine a situation in which they could have the existence of God proven to them (a legitimate miracle of the water-to-wine variety, for instance). The problem with those who unquestioningly follow a dogma (fundamentalists of any variety, be they Christian, Muslim, etc.) is that there is nothing that they would consider solid enough evidence that a supreme power does not exist. Part of this is the fact that you can't prove a negative, clearly. But that's the big difference between fundamentalists and those who question - if you ask questions, you open yourself up to the possibility of being wrong and having to change your beliefs. If you blindly follow, you avoid such change by not allowing yourself to think of situations in which your dogma would be proven wrong.

I feel like I'm writing in circles, and still haven't gotten my point across clearly, but books have been written on this topic.
