Hi,

Are thumb throttles good? I have a MTB with a curved set of handlebars so to go for twist throttle I would have to replace the handlebars. If twist's are better are the that much better it is worth changing?

Thansk

I actually prefer thumb throttles over twist grips - or even half grips. I don't like the strain the twisting puts on my wrist, and prefer to have a firm and steady hold on the bars when riding.

I keep breaking thumb throttles, breaking off the little lever , because I ride WOT all the time hitting a big bump transfers too much pressure to the lever. So I''ve learned to make half twist throttles out of em with a piece of 1" pvc pipe glued to the thumb throttle. Anticipating that this will happen again, I put the pipe on a thumb throttle that hadn't broken yet, and AH HA! The best throttle yet, it's both a thumb throttle and a half twist. Works great! I throw away the front derailur and shifter so I don't have problems with compatibility with the twist shifter. No problem fitting it on any handlebar. When I know it will be bumpy, I can take my thumb off the lever now, and use the half twist. When starting up, I like the controll of the thumb throttle.

oh...I've just realized I have a lever gears on the handlebars  - doesn't this imply I'll need to go for a twist throttle (perhaps 1/2 twist would be good?) else I won't be able to change gears without taking my thumb off the throttle no?

I prefer half twist's also, but used thumb throttle for 5 years and liked it also.

Removing the front gear selector lever from the handlebars gives you much more room and works better alround. If you need to shift your front chain rings, just mount a selector elseware.
Front chain rings are not used often for most ebikers i think, i only use two of the three provided.

that looks quite good Russell - hadn't see one like that - where can you order one from?

They have been out of stock at the place I bought mine for some time

http://www.extremescooters.biz/throttleleverbladezpart70171.aspx?MMP=1014981732

However they are available at these two places at a higher price

and here it is "as is" whatever that means

My experience (quite a bit) is with thumb accelerators (cummon Bud... they are NOT throttles w/electrics <grin>), although I have borrowed twist also. Didn't like the twists `cause too easy to twist inadvertently just grabbing the handles when not riding... If the controller has a safety thingee built in w/no power before x rpms of wheel might be different.

Having said this I have had problems with "thumb ache" after hours of "pedal to the metal" with thumb levers... cruise control that disconnects with brake action would be nice. Anywhoo, there are earlier threads on ES about thumb versus twist. Uhhh... maybe, if not purged from old age.
tks

Ajdust the position of thumb throttles to eliminate thumb ache. The way I set em, you can't see the little lights anymore from the top. Again, I REALLY like the thumb throttle that is also a half twist. When the thumb gets tired, I use it as a half twist, and so on back and forth. The throttles are make of pvc, so a small piece of one inch pipe glues on in a second. I use a piece from an old grip shifter to shim it to the perfect size. Either one works with trigger shifters fine, you can coast a sec while you shift.

I'll get some up soon, maybe in a new thread so it's not buried.

I like my TRIGGER throttle most of all. Squeezing a lever is more natural for a bike rider than rotating the wrist or thumb. Another good thing I found is placing one finger under the lever makes a nice throttle limiter

You could probably also rig something like this up with a spare brake lever. Route the cable back to the controller or where ever is convenient and use a lever on a pot for the throttle with spring return. Bet you could do it even more cheaply by connecting to a stock thumb-throttle - already has the lever and spring set up for you. For some setups it might be nice to have the full-length brake lever, so it might work mounted inside a shifter.

Yeah all that might work and you're welcome to try it and report back but for $14+shipping and a couple of resistors I got what I got...and it works very well. I know if some of you guys would try it you would like it better than what you're currently using which is why I mention it every chance I get

No disagreement there. Still designing my build, but a lever-type throttle sounds much better to me than either twist- or thumb-type.

I like the lever design as well. Do you have any pics of one mounted? I'm curious if it gets in the way of a right-hand brake lever.....

.

The one downside to this particular throttle is that it's big. It is made for use on the right side but it works just as well on the left. To make room for it I moved the front derailleur shifting to the downtube, though I haven't shifted off the 42T ring since the bike has been electrified (Bashguard/42T/30T). The throttle has a hefty feel compared to cheap hall thumb and twist controllers and doesn't bind like some of those tend to do with plastic rubbing on plastic.

Russell - what's the shinny thing at the front of your bike (i.e. with glare) - is it the controller? Actually do you have thread where you've got some good resolution pictures of your bike?

Yeah that's the little 36V/15A controller. It was a flash picture in a dark hallway but all I wanted to show was how the throttle looked from the front. I have a thread with a couple full shots here;

Hey dogman - did you have a picture of what you've done here posted somewhere? I'd be interested. Which thumb throttle did you use as your starting point?
