Tire mount directly to Direct Drive motor

Are there any methods/hacks for attaching a tire directly to this style direct drive hub motor?

I've got a scooter which can fit this kind of motor, but not a laced rim+tire. However, with just a tire, it'd have room.

Off the top of my head, the stem for an inner tube would be a problem, and the rim where the holes are isn't straight (or bead curved). Maybe a solid tire designed to fit in that space?

A solid tire, if you could find one with the right ID, might work, but it will suck to ride, and you'll have to do something to keep the tire from spinning on the flanges.

they have versions of motors in that size range that have rims bolted directly to the motor or are actually part of the motor instead of spoke flanges, that might work. One such motor is pictured right on their main page. I have pics of another on my Cloudwalker Cargo Bike thread, salvaged from an E-grom clone.

Indeed; there's definitely options out there for this fitment. Usually they're filed under "moped"/"scooter" type motors, I'm just poking about to see if there's a way to reuse what I've already got in this form factor

You could see if QSmotor will sell you just the flange-mounted rim, if they're separate from the rotor, and if they're not, get just the rotor/rim, if they have one that's the right diameter and width to replace your motor's.

There's also at least one thread around here about making such a rim, but I couldn't find it in a few minutes' poking around, probably not using the right search terms. :/

Oh, and goldenmotor also makes motors with spokeless rims, you might be able to get one from them as spare part.

Because it's solid would you even be able to force it over the motor rim and seated properly?

Another option is to measure the ID of a 12" tire to see if it's possible to make it fit. You could buy one just to see if it's possible. If not return it.

If its a good fit drill a couple holes in the tire (180 degrees opposite of each other) just big enuf to allow filling the tire with an aerosol foam that will expand and solidify. It may still have some bounce to it ... better than a solid hard tire ... as long as no flat spots :wink:

Note: I don't specifically have the MXUS motor, I was just using that picture as a reference for this general style of motor.
