To Nuvinci or not to Nuvinci

I'm just about to pull the trigger on a N360 rear CVT hub from Nuvinci...but I'm not 100% convinced.

What I do know is I do want an internal geared hub, not a external geared unit. I've got a 750W Bafang crank drive unit that will power the bike.

The Alfine 11spd was my other choice, but I've tossed that out the window as its been reviewed as fragile even without electric power...so a ebike would possibly destroy it.

I've enjoyed a simple 3spd internal SRAM unit, and with the crank driven motor, its as simple as switchin 3 gears. Of course, without battery power, the 3spd does not have a low or tall enough ratios.

So. I'm no debating between a Alfine or Nexus 8spd unit with about 307% gear range, or the Nexus N360 with 360% gear range.

Does anyone have any experience with either or both in an ebike application?

I know the Bosch middrive ebike unit broke a lot of nexus 8's, before they reduced its power. Even now, a Bosch middrive with gear cluster delivers a higher amount of support thsn with a Nexus 8. Just do a google search and you should be able to confirm this

I like the NuVinci N360 a lot for pedaling. I use them on both my e-bikes (see signature). I bypass the electric power transmission issues by powering them through the left side thought :)

Thanks guys.

I've heard some issues with slipping and poor efficiency with the nuvinci.

I don't think there is any internal geared hubs that have passed the test of ebike by the sounds of it...?

The nexus 7spd perhaps?

For $125, you should try the N171b out. It's heavier than the N360, but also beefier...

I thought about installing it on my BBS02 Hardtail, but never got around to it.

Yea, for $125 you cant go wrong.

The link provided is for the developer kit. I'm wondering how much work it would be to get the transmission to shift as it does not include a gear selector and cable...?

Actually, it's the AutoShifting kit, which is an electronic control. No shift cable required. You need to program the shift profile to the controller, which is based on speed.

Any other IG Hubs that have stood the test of time when it comes to about 750W?
Rohloff.

The guys at Thunderstruck Motors tested a Jackal with and without a NuVinci hub installed. Same motor, same batteries. The overall Whr/mi was very close to the same. The improvement you get from gearing was balanced out by the losses in the gearing. This was over 'typical', mostly flat ground riding.

Ihave used a Nuvinci 360 with a cyclone 1600w motor and a 44v20amp lipo for over 2000 miles... works great.. no problems top speed, high gear=17.6 mph....low gear,29.6mph...20" wheel.... try Cyclone motors TW for a good price on the Nuvinci

Cool.

I'm still curious if the 2012 model advertised in the link above is different. I mean its half price of the 2014 model N360.

Anyone know for sure? I've sent Nuvinci and email and a phone call, but they have yet to reply.
