Hi all,
I'm wanting to hear from anyone who has upgraded (or purchased with disc mount) a 408 REAR hub motor.

I'm contemplating putting my 408 on my avanti barracuda, but found without stretching the dropouts (by putting a nut on the brake side of the motor) that the motor won't clear the brake caliper.

is it safe to stretch the dropouts? (it would actually mean the 408 doesn't have to be dished = better imho)

i've cleared an extra 12mm no problems (by putting a nut and a washer between the motor and the left dropout - how can i check that the disc motor plate and rotor will fit? (it looks like it will fit without drama).

the dimensions of the regular 408 motor on ebikes.ca don't seem to fit my motor dimensions.

huge thankyou in advance.

I'm also interested in this- my giant yukon comes with a rear disk and no mounts for V brakes, so I've got no rear brake at all.
I'm running a 408/412 dual, but never use the 12 windings. Controller is an 20A with upgraded 4110 FETS. Does about 42 on 56V, 52 or so on 84V.

I had to do a lot of modifying to fit the rear disk on my KMX. I used a single speed freewheel cog to replace the 6 speed cluster, and cut down the axle so I could move the whole wheel across about 15mm, which also allowed me to run with no dish in the wheel.

BTW, Mark from Team Hybrid in the UK has rear disks that mount onto a cluster mounting. All you need to do is put a threaded side cover on the brake side of the motor and spin the disk on. Not sure about caliper clearance on a 408 tho!

Whereabouts are you, BigH? Could you put up some photos of the setup and how you've mounted the disk to the motor?

It will require stretching the rear dropouts.

I've ordered the side motor screw thingy and a rotor (inc adaptor) from ebikes.ca.

It was sent today. so should get it.. well sometime - Have some photos atm - will let you know when its all mounted up (crosses fingers).

Don't suppose you want another dual controller? :p i'm going to sell mine since the 35a controller is being very reliable (4310 fets)

Take Care,
Haydon

If the frame is steel you can spread the drop outs. My clyte came with the wide axle for a disc brake and a motor side cover without the thread for mounting the disc brake disc, argh!!.I ended up having to spread the dropouts 20mm
to get the motor to fit into the frame.I used a turnbuckle and a lot of patience to widen it,but it worked.

I've checked with brett - and it seems as though i should only need to stretch my bike about 14mm - which i was able to do by simply spreading the dropouts and placing the wheel in there (not much force required). i'm not sure if it is a steel frame or not ( im getting the feeling it is actually). the dimensions on ebikes look reasonably positive too. It's a gamble but i hope one that pays off.

parts are on order... will docu this fully when they arrive - time for sleep peeps!
