[USA] Will Tariffs come about and lead to higher priced ebike parts

It's going to court the first of next month. In a nut shell, They can put on tariffs but thru the process not saying tariffs on, tariffs off. So the craziness should calm down. We will need to wait and see.

Someone must have been watching the old Karate Kid film with Mr. Miyagi saying "Wax on, right hand. Wax off, left hand. Wax on, wax off. Breathe in through nose, out the mouth." and see if we get away with the tariffs. Is that right Coca-cola are thinking of pulling out of the USA to Germany or the Netherlands, what happens if Pepsi Cola have the same idea, then Levi and Wrangler. Do not where each of them get their base materials from.

I was considering buying the cyclone controller from Hong Kong but could not figure out what extra tariff charges currently apply.

I also have the option of getting a Fardriver controller thru Dun Electric via Mal Asia .

Does anyone know the applicable tariffs in place today that would apply to these options?

Probably tariffs in place for the next week would be a better suited dateline as I think tariffs are accessed at US customs.

I just ordered some items. $7 plus free shipping on aliexpress if I ordered two. So I did, and the email said they shipped. Apparently, if de minimus waiver is gone, they still haven't started charging it yet. Or it won;t arrive and be thrown in a warehous which will quickly fill up.

For now, i'm a big fan of this option on ebay.

Will be interesting who the last mile carrier is and if you'll have to pay tariff before package release. I have not bought anything since de mininus was cancelled on May 2nd. Last mile on all my free shipping orders within the past 2 years were mostly delivered by a private courier (Better Trucks) within 8 to 10 days of placing the order. Now I see on aliexpress shipping methods specified: USPS, DHL, Fedx, UPS etc, so they can charge you tariff I suppose? Before this tariff BS, shipping method was not specified as I remember.

Time to place a test aliexpress order.

Yes, but all this "deal" does is put things back to where they were before all this nonsense started. This is a recurring theme... create a "problem" and then pretend to solve it and take credit for solving it. All the fake drama of a reality show... except this is our real economy they are mucking with.

Hm.. 55%.. and in theory.. export controls on advanced American technology can be negotiated now.

Are there any institutions in the US that can put runaway president under some control? Or are they too afraid to even speak?
I mean, the world's guardian of democracy looks suspiciously similar to a dictatorship (at least from the outside)

Looks like that from inside, too. IDK how it can be stopped... since the DoJ has been totally corrupted and politicized there is no independent entity to enforce court rulings that might try to rein this nonsense in.

From what I've heard aliexpress choice items have the customs fees included which can you tell because they are more expensive than they used to be. I placed an order awhile ago and seems to be through customs fine so we'll see.

After receiving package, please report back whether you had to pay additional tariffs or fees.

What are "choice items"?

I ordered a battery from EM3EV during the tariff "pause" and it is to be delivered today unless FedEx drops the ball again. I haven't been charged any tariffs... yet. I'll also report back after I get it.

"Choice" is aliexpress thing where if you order over $10 or whatever you get free shipping and they combine all the items from multiple sellers into once package to save shipping. You can see items tagged as "choice" or filter by it. You also noticed that when in the cart and at checkout they give estimates of what the additional fees will be, choice are generally only the sales tax (because the customs duties are built into the price) while non-choice items it shows what the actual tariff duty will be.

This is why, when I'm shopping for cheap electronic modules in the 2-$20 price range, i'll often see the "choice" items 50-100% higher priced than the literally identical item from a different seller. Because the "choice" seller has shipping, tariffs, some taxes etc, baked into their price already

Got my new battery today from EM3EV... 52V King Shark, about 20 Ah, with 21700 cells. No tariff charges. At least no NEW tariff charges. There may be some built into the purchase price that gets settled on the sender's end, but IDK. So, it seems to be all good and business as usual for these batteries, at least from this source.

The other good news is that it uses the same battery socket tray as the Super Shark and fits inside the triangle of my bike with CYC Photon. So, now I have almost twice the range... and less worries about voltage sag towards the ends of rides.

One reminder if you haven't gotten a battery from these guys for awhile, with the king Shark variety, at least, you need to "force start" your charge if using a Grin Satiator. They changed the BMS for some reason and the Grin won't automatically see that the battery is connected. They told me this is to prevent sparking when connecting but I never had any problems with their other batteries, so IDK.

What is force start? A button?

Yes, hold the lower button for a couple of seconds, it pops up a dialog box "force start?". Then hit the button to confirm. Basically force start begins the charge and if the battery takes it, it keeps going as normal to completion.

Edit: Upon further review... the charge does NOT keep going. It stopped after awhile, not sure if BMS issue or charger issue. EM3EV sent me some instructions with some other changes to make in the Satiator app. Apparently need to set "current tare" to 0. What a PITA.

Today I ask James of Dun electric bike store Malaysia to send a PayPal Invoice for 2 fardriver controllers. About the tariffs he said, “we can ship tax free by express”. I have not received the invoice yet. I do wonder if using express out of Malaysia is currently a tariff free method. More will be posted if i proceed with his offer.
