Hi Matt,

I can tell you that I am looking at a second drive unit design right now. I would still offer the V3 drive, while offering a second style drive that would be more compact, narrower Q factor, lighter, more rigid, fewer parts, better looking, and allow for MUCH better heat dissipation. It would look completely different than V3 drive. In fact, it would not share a single part of the V3 drive or resemble it in any way what-so-ever. This design does have its drawbacks, though. I am trying to eliminate those drawbacks before taking it to the prototype stage.

Sounds good! I think a chain/belt enclosure is a compelling option and I think its possible to come up with a design in which the enclosure and drive are integrated in such a way that its simpler and hopefully cheaper than a V3 plus an add-on case.

Want to start a thread (after September 12) with the new proposed design ? If it includes an enclosure, has the advantages you state and the cost isn't prohibitive I don't know why anyone would choose a V3.

This other design actually does not use a case, nor is it angle adjustable like the V3 drive. The very nature of the design does not allow for that. It is hard to explain.

I am not starting a thread about it untill I have something to show. Also, I do not want any orders to stall "Waiting for the new drive". It will be a few months before anything is ready to show. I just wanted you guys to know I am constantly refining and looking at other layouts.

Have you given recent consideration to using gears?

You can get prefabricated gears in a wide range of ratios that drop in easily. I think they would be simpler, more reliable, more compact and quieter, especially if you used helical cut gears.

Also, I wonder if your math is wrong on the maximum ratio? 54/13 is 4.15. Am I missing something?

A third question, can this drive be two stage or is it limited to single stage?

Still contemplating a bike, maybe not the recumbent though. I've been reading the thread every now and then, would like to see where it goes.
