VisforVoltage forums down

+1

Possibly the biggest reason in favour of it beeing re-instated.

Two nights ago I checked the voltage forums and to my surprise they were back to life and better then ever, was I ever ecstatic. It had all the old posts still, and looked somewhat like the original V but what little clunkiness there was had been adressed. I let myself be impressed rather then search for electricly insulating heat conducting materials, it's amazing how much info you can obtain from forums while in dream state, if you've ever done it. But back in waking state I checked, and V is still down.

I appreciate theese type of things can take rather a long time to pull off, having been in the position. But this is getting long, isn't it?

Most of the data was downloaded.
I have two of the backup, and there is another in France I need to download.
All the data needs to be cleaned before it can be used.
When I start going through it what area were you interested in?

Hmm, well if I could launch a search on V, I would try my luck in the controllers section. Seems likely the topic of heat conductive but electricly insulating materials could have been discussed there.

But, it's going to take tediously long to go through an entire forum like that.
Isn't it possible to access an archive of it somewhere?

Not yet, not until I find someone to write a program to remove the malware.
It's so large it takes me almost a full day just to open it.
This is how the site looked during it's last days.

I'll latter post it on another site whee it will open faster

Yeah, I saw that one on the the current Voltage forums.
It won't open on my computer, however.

The google cache is too recent to be usefull, it shows december 3rd:

I did get the april 24th 2006 version from the wayback machine:
http://tinyurl.com/y5u3bz
But one can't go read the posts?

The one on http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/VRefuge/ won't open.
It's in the photo section. I can send it to you if you like, and the very strange picture they posted. My email is georgejjonesjr@hotmail.com .
I just tried to upload it to the Vrefuge blog, and it won't go.
Your HTML cannot be accepted: Tag is not allowed: <script type="text/javascript"> so it's infected and I have remove it until I remove the bad script. So it's been in my cache all this time, I knew it hide in the temp internet file. I'm going to have to give my computer a good hot bath, better check your cache also. Are you using IE?

Hi Knightmb -i don't know if your site here will do the V -hosting or not -thanks for the offer. It looks like a nice setup.
Can you add different sections like they had at V -if people do decide to come here? I know Reid was pretty keen on this place -sounds alot cheaper than what Reikimann is doing.

What would you have to upgrage if there was a big infux of members?

Cheers Dom

Yeah, no limit to how many sections that can be added. My interest has been e-bikes and alternative fuel so that's why only these sections are here. I see no reason why I can't add another 10 sections with a ton of sub-sections if it's necessary. It's easy for me to setup moderator groups, so forum members can govern certain areas of their interest if they want to without them having enough access to wreck or hack the forums for example. I've been managing forums for over a decade (both personally and professionally), back when infopop was popular with their UBB flat file forums (mid 90s), then moved on to phpbb (late 90s) because it was open source, free, and easy to use with any server setup.

I like to keep things on topic with the forum, that's why a lot of posts here had been removed because it was advertisements for Viagra or lottery, etc. That's why registration is strict here at the moment, too many spam bots get accounts to post up crap ever since the news airing about my e-bike setup. I think the bots have finally given up because I haven't seen too many in a while, so opening up registration to be automated again would be no problem for me.

As far as upgrading, given how many members post at the current voltage forums, I don't see it as much of a strain. Forums use very little bandwidth and CPU on the server, so the big thing would be if someone had an attachment in a forum and then for some reason thousands of people from around the world were going directly to that attachment (maybe via Google for example), but the forum is setup not to let Google or other search engines direct access to file attachments here so that might help.

knightmb,
This is the first time I've seen this information. It would have been nice if it was available when I did the poll http://visforvoltage.net/poll/82-assuming-http-visforvoltage-com-your-first-choice-what-would-be-your-next-choice. I tried to contact you on the VV site email, but I don't know if you received it or not. How can we get more details on your offer?

Well, in my experience, just about any forum software can be expanded to any size needed, it's just keeping the hard drive space on the server or database server to keep it running. I have not received any e-mails from the VV forum, even checked my junk mail just to make sure.

The only bit of more detail I can add is that it's open for people to use, it won't have any ads or other marketing push added because I want to keep it open for ideas and discussion but minimize the "distractions" because of advertising or flashy colors. I wanted this to be as functional as possible by allowing people to post large attachments so they don't have to worry about third party hosting, along with more general topics without trying to break it up into every possible detail of a topic.

I wanted to keep everyone together. The thing about a forum that gets really big is your community breaks up and people in the one forum never really interact with people in another forum for example. That's why I'm starting things out small here. As long as chaos doesn't reign here, I'm happy and I hope everyone else is happy as well.

It is a plain setup, but I want to keep the forum up to date on software so keep hackers out and the good ideas in. The only problem with doing too much modding on the forum is keep the security updates along with it. Every time a new update is released, it breaks all the mods until the mod authors catch up. The only mod I've used here is the attachment mod, so we can attach any file or picture directly into the message without having to worry about hosting.

Well, I realize all that I just said isn't really saying much, LOL, but I'm glad everyone is here and I hope to make it as pleasant and useful as possible.

Just completed the download from France, which is the easiest so far to access. What kind of post were you looking for?

Thanks, but I found what I was looking for here:

:? What is "France", if not the country?

You speak in codes, Gman.

Do you have a link, or is this something you control 'n dole too?

It's a 6 hour download, and he has to leave his computer on while it downloads. There is no link.

LOLwut? You been going through a LOT of old posts, it seems.

This is about the old V forums (of which I was never a part of), which never came back.

I was getting bored of the more current threads so I thought, "Hey, why not something new?" and so I went to the back of the line. Oh, such a wealth of topics I haven't seen before. And... the general eloquence seemed a bit higher. And spelling. And humor. And... there didn't seem to be a lot of ummmm.... "n00bs.". I guess e-biking wasn't very popular back then, so the more dedicated enthusiasts seemed to be more present. Although, I have a feeling I'd still be "E-biking" even if SLA was still around as I started off with the impression SLA was the only "real" option and gas prices had no influence on the selling of my car, which was my primary motivator to switch modes of transportation so I'd be among the n00bs that'd probably be an under-represented group if gas prices didn't go up.

The majority of the earlier members were actually those from the old V site when it got hacked, so that might have had something to do with it, too.
