Not yours, I guess.

Others believe themselves to be with hundreds of times as much. I disagree with them too.

Male Bicyclist Hit By Metro Expo Line Train On Tuesday Has Died
February 7, 2018

One of two male bicyclists hit by a Metro Expo Line train in southwest Los Angeles has died, police said Wednesday.

Other Bicyclist In Critical Condition

Paramedics sent to Flower Street and Jefferson Boulevard at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday took the pair to a hospital, where one died and the other was in critical condition, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

Authorities withheld the name of the fatally injured person, pending notification of his relatives.

Attempting To Cross The Tracks

“Three males were riding on bicycles westbound on Jefferson Avenue approaching Flower Street and the Metro train tracks,” an LAPD statement said. “All three cyclists attempted to cross the train tracks, even though there was an oncoming train northbound.

“The first male rode across the tracks without being hit, but the second and third male were both struck by the oncoming train,” the statement said.

Train Was Empty

The train involved was a “test train” and was not carrying any passengers, Metro’s Jose Ubaldo said.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call police at (323) 421-2500, or (877) LAPD-247.

Specialized fork recall upgraded as 13,000 units worldwide deemed at risk

 19 February, 2018 Mark Sutton

An issue that came to light late in 2017 relating to the fork crown on MY18 Specialized Allez bikes has now resulted in a formal recall from the U.S. CPSC and Canadian Government.

Specialized’s director of engineering Mark Schroeder earlier outlined: “After careful examination, we’ve concluded that some model year 2018 Allez, Allez Elite, and Allez Sport model bikes may contain a manufacturing defect in the fork crown which potentially affects safety. Therefore, we’ve decided to prepare for a recall which will involve replacing the existing fork with a new fork.”

Around 5,500 of the Allez, Allez Sport and Allez Elite bikes are believed to have been sold in the U.S., with up to 13,000 affected bikes in circulation worldwide.

Retailers of affected bikes are to be notified, with replacement fork availability staggered through to March when the brand anticipates having enough to meet the global replacement demand.

Those in the U.S. can find recall information here, while shops in the U.S. can contact the brand for replacement forks via email, or by calling (800) 722-4423

This story has a lot going for it: a battery electric vehicle, an ignorant miscreant, a machete-wielding do-gooder, and a morally bankrupt state legislature. You couldn't make this stuff up.

The car drivers had it coming.

Really, that should be the presumption of the law at all times. Otherwise the ethical burden of cars being death machines gets shifted to those who don't drive them.

From New York City, and you bet, I said yes, use it as you like, it might save others from crashes. Mine was a lark, considering what it could have been at my 23mph; what saved me was a somewhat oblique angle of contact.

Hi Reid,

I am following up on our phone conversation tonight.

This concerned the YouTube that you provided Todd Tongan for use within his story tonight on our affiliate WPLG’s newcast.

Please confirm that you told me that ABC News is able to use and distribute your video as we see fit, that it is being made available to ABC News shows and platforms, both broadcast and digital as well as to ABC affiliates and our partners, and that you consider it now to be part of the public domain.

Also, if possible, please allow the same usage of the still photo of your wound that you provided WPLG. I wasn’t.aware that Todd had used it in his story when we spoke.

On a personal note, it’s wonderful and remarkable that you survived this accident so well and that you want others to benefit from it.

Thank you again.

Sincerely,

Kevin

So will we be seeing you, or what? [snap]
I was just about to resume my long-dormant career, having just three hours earlier mailed out the following,
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Xas8K3bd0JaiXaJ_e-HqTmRUrSKqbyLB/view?usp=sharing
after months of scrimping to replace the thousands of dollars of specialty tools of my trade!

The timing of the accident was such that I now have to delay my return to work for a while yet longer.
Oh well, I could have been killed but for the lucky angle of the impact, or banned again here; the same thing, really, in the only practical effect that matters: absence of entity.

Dang, kewl profession. Just out of curiosity as I'm 3,000 Miles away: what might it cost to get the tuning and maybe half the keys rebuilt on a 70 year old Story and Clark that was left behind in my house.? I know you cant guess the actual price, but might it run 2 grand, 5 grand, more? And how might I judge when its not worth the cost?

I've had a couple of near-misses where cars did the same thing. As soon as they passed me, sudden right turn with no signals. Luckily my brakes are good. One time I did a big stoppie where my rear wheel lifted about a foot. Driver saw me and froze like a deer in the headlights. Idiot.

http://road.cc/content/news/238687-mechanical-doping-criminal-conviction-french-amateur-cyclist-found-using-hidden
An amateur cyclist in France who was found using a hidden motor at a race has been sentenced for fraud and attempted fraud by a criminal court.
Yesterday, Cyril Fontayne, aged 43 and a plasterer by trade was sentenced to 60 hours’ community service at the Périgueux criminal court after admitting the charges, reports Ouest France(link is external).
He had already been banned from holding a racing licence for five years by the French cycling federation (FFC), which under yesterday’s ruling received symbolic damages of 1 euro.
The rider was targeted by France’s national anti-doping agency, the Agence française de lutte contre le dopage (AFLD) after a dramatic improvement in his results.
He was caught in October in the Dordogne as he drove home from the Category 3 Grand Prix de Saint-Michel-de-Double race, organised by his club, SA Mussidan.
Fontayne had been leading the race when he abandoned due to a puncture and was chased down by the AFLD’s regional representative, the former pro cyclist Christophe Bassons, who found the hidden motor.
Bassons revealed at the time that the motor was a Vivax Assist, which the cyclist had bought online and installed on his bike.
After yesterday’s hearing, Bassons said: “Today, it has been shown that cheating during a race can lead to a conviction for fraud."
Fontayne was also told to pay 88 euro to the Créon-d’Armagnac cycling club, organisers of another race in which he used the banned technology.
It’s the third case involving the discovery of a concealed motor in competition, and the first in France.
In August last year, an amateur cyclist in Italy was found using a hidden motor.
The most significant case so far involved one found in a bike belonging to under-23 Belgian rider Femke Van den Driessche at the UCI World Cyclo-cross Championships in 2016.

Uber self-driving car kills pedestrian in first fatal autonomous crash
by Matt McFarland @mattmcfarland
March 19, 2018: 1:40 PM ET

http://money.cnn.com/2018/03/19/technology/uber-autonomous-car-fatal-crash/index.html

Uber has removed its self-driving cars from the roads following what is believed to be the first fatality involving a fully autonomous car.

A self-driving Uber SUV struck and killed 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg as she walked her bicycle across a street in Tempe, Arizona, Sunday night, according to the Tempe police. The department is investigating the crash.

A driver was behind the wheel of the Volvo XC90 SUV at the time, the police said.

"The vehicle involved is one of Uber's self-driving vehicles," the Tempe police said in a statement. "It was in autonomous mode at the time of the collision, with a vehicle operator behind the wheel."

Autonomous mode means the car is driving on its own. During tests, a person sits behind the wheel as a safeguard.

Uber is conducting tests of autonomous vehicles in Arizona, Pittsburgh, Toronto and other areas. Uber said it has stopped testing the vehicles throughout the United States and Canada.

Uber said it is "fully cooperating" with local officials. "Our hearts go out to the victim's family," Uber said in a statement.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it is launching an investigation.

For self-driving cars, dealing with pedestrians and bicyclists is a challenging task. The self-driving industry has found quicker success with highway driving, which is a less complicated environment.

Uber has previously grounded its vehicles while investigating a crash. In 2017, Uber briefly pulled its vehicles from roads after an Uber self-driving vehicle in Tempe landed on its side.

Arizona is a hotbed of self-driving car development. Earlier this month, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey updated an executive order to allow self-driving cars to drive on state roads without a test driver behind the wheel.

Meanwhile, Waymo, the self-driving arm of Google's parent company, is launching a public self-driving car service this year in the Phoenix, Arizona, area. Companies such as GM's Cruise and Intel are also testing in the state.

Arizona has little inclement weather. This makes it more appealing for self-driving cars, which can struggle in rain or during snowfall.

This isn't the first futuristic car involved in a fatal crash. In 2016, a man driving a Tesla was killed while its autopilot system was activated. But Tesla Autopilot is partially autonomous. A human driver is required to handle much of the driving.

However, Uber's system is designed to fully replace a human driver.
