What did I buy. A hub mo.... Battery?

Cocaine! I bet you it's actually cocaine smuggled in that package, and somehow it got missed by the criminals.

Now, a hilarious misadventure of you trying to outrun them and cash in on the drugs is going to ensue.

Other than that, no idea why anyone would want to put a battery inside a wheel. Isn't that just unnecessary momentum on the wheels?

The battery part doesn't turn. It is stationary and locked to the hub.

I'm just wondering if it might be salvageable I was going to buy a battery as I'm planning my first build right now. The other motor I picked up appears to be a bafang 250w geared motor.

If I could use this battery then I would only need a throttle and controller.

They are probably from a "Wavecrest Tidalforce" Ebike, that were built 2004-2005 with a hub motor in the rear wheel and a 8-Ah Saft D-cell NIMH battery pack in the front hub.
Good quality kit if its still functional ( those cells are very durable)

Not TF its the back hub! I have 1 just like it on a cheap folding mtn bike the battery is pouch cells there is a small bms in there to, I tried to
bring my batts back to life 2 or 3 of the pouches wouldn't recharge so I haven't fooled with it in a year I think it was 36v but a max 42v charge
I could look at it mon and be sure I bought the bike used thinking it was a easy fix ,not so much
