What kind of helmet do you use?

I wear a helmet of pure radiant righteousness given by Jah the Almighty. It works at least as well as the models I have used from Bell, Specialized, and Giro. It weighs a lot less and allows better air circulation, too.

It's a very personal choice.

I don't ride that fast normally, but when I do I'll put on everything. Full face motorcycle helmet, armored riding jacket, etc. But no illusions that any of that shit will help one bit if I smack a car or a concrete object at 50 mph or more. Makes a laydown a lot more comfortable at 50 mph though!!!

On a 30 mph or less e bike, I do wear a regular bike helmet. No other armor, unless is cold enough for gloves. closed toe shoes or sandals, no flip flops. I've used a road bike helmet up, and appreciated it that in that crash only collarbones got damaged. Crushed the shit out of the helmet on the curb. That was at 15 mph. In winter, I switch to a snowboarders helmet, for warmth.

I don't give a flying f---- how I look. But I've used up both motorcycle and bike helmets in the past. So only on a very rare occasion do I forget to wear one. It's just so much more comfortable to grind a quarter inch into a helmet, vs your skull. I've done a 50 mph head stand, till the flipping started. But let a car hit you, don't go thinking you'll be ok because of the stupid helmet.

I'm with dogman dan with helmets. Your head is one of the few places in a human body that isn't repaired quite so easy. I'm a 30+ all weather rider so use a DS motorcycle X551. The visor is removable for googles whilst offroad, but when it's raining cats and dogs you can lid down and enjoy the ride. I wear Gore Pro textiles too, just lightweight enough that if electric assist somehow conks out 100% pedalling isn't too uncomfortable.

Did hear a while ago about how a certain style bicycle helmet are in fact more dangerous than going without. If your going to wear a half hearted one, why not just go full face/head protection and be 100% sure your head is safe . Helmet for your own personal needs, the X551 meets mine.

Here's what I settled on. Fox Head Transition helmet. It's a MTB helmet but built more like a motorcycle helmet. Very solid with dense padding and full coverage, yet light. Used it for a week on my daily commute and I like it so far.

Can't wear bell helmets in the UK. To call someone a bell is an insult. A shortened version of calling them a bellend or penis. They seem to sell still but to people that must lead a very sheltered lifestyle.

Statistically car passengers would benifit more from helmets than cyclists. I don't bother. Though gloves are an absolute must and I have looked at elbow socks.

I'm old enough to never have worn a helmet as a kid on a bike, nobody, I mean NOBODY, did. I still recently didn't wear one, when riding my Montague that I keep in the plane. But since I have converted that same Montague to a E bike, I have twice left skid marks about 6' long (my fault, showing off my new ride), and it got me thinking...... it's faster now, and going faster is really fun and hard to resist. I LIKE showing it off, and will no doubt continue to hot rod it a bit. It's also about 20 lbs. heavier, this thread pushed me over the edge, and I ordered a Fox Head Transition helmet yesterday. I also snowboard without a helmet, around here it's about 50/50 use for that activity. I wore a helmet hang gliding and on my bike road bike motorcycles, but this is my first bicycle helmet, I just hope I don't hot rod even more because of the added feeling of protection it will probably give

Injury and mortality rates for bicyclists haven't changed significantly since then, either. (My hypothesis is that risk compensation by cyclists and motorists fully offsets the increase in physical protection.) Anyway, the value of helmets for bicyclists appears to be net zero in the big picture.

However, what many of us here are riding is actually a light motorcycle, and helmets have statistically proven benefits for motorcyclists.

In my opinion, we all know who we are. If we're risk takers, adrenaline junkies, accident prone, or just motorcyclists who happen to have pedals on our motorcycles, then helmets probably will do more good than harm. If we're bicyclists doing what bicyclists do, then helmets are probably a wash in terms of good versus harm.

I used to wear bicycle helmets, but when I got older and slower and stopped crashing my bike, I reckoned that the loss of situational awareness from wearing one was at least as much of a factor as the meager protection it provided. I haven't used one in many years, nor hit my head while riding during that time. I've bonked my head doing a lot of other things that nobody wears a helmet for, though.

I do often seem to get myself into the most trouble when opting for a bunch of protective gear (and even seem to wreck more often with a helmet), likely stemming from fixation on negative aspects of protection, and/or unrealistic expectation and over confidence. But admittedly that is just an overcomable mental imbalance between expectation and reality.

Imo and generally speaking, protective gear should be considered as irrelevant/ detatched from getting into/out of an accidental situation, but obviously directly tied to personal physicial benefit in the event of an accident. You could write a book (someone probably has lol) on the subject.

When I was trying to get starts on my yz450 I wore a helmet when I was doing loops in my HangGlider I wore one When I ride my E bike I were barkbusters!!

I chose a Bell Stoker Helmet. I saw it in my local bike store for $75.00 but I found the same helmet at Competitive Cyclist for around $36.00 Delivered.

One major reason why I chose this helmet is because it has more coverage in the back then the standard Bike Helmets. Cross between skateboard helmet and bike. At around $36.00 delivered it's a steal.

It's a great Spring or Summer helmet as it has really good Aeration.

Also this is the 2015 version that has an adjustable visor. Earlier versions the visor is not adjustable.

As for quality, It's Bell middle of the line, in my opinion should be fine for up to 30mph.

It all depends on the temperature. I have a 3/4 face DOT helmet for when it's below 50 F. If it's 50-65 I will wear a $14 bmx helmet or this snowboard helmet I got for free at a yard sale. Warmer than that and I just wear a typical low end bicycle helmet with a decent visor. Even the bmx helmet gets stuffy and hot feeling if I am pedaling and it's above 70 degrees.

The comment about bicycle helmets only for roadies who ride 10,000$ bikes bent over the handlebars is silly. There are a lot of different 'normal' bicycle helmet designs. You don't need to spend more than $30 either. The ventilation is a significant factor if it's warm/hot out.

No, not silly. There are helmets designed specifically for those who do high performance road riding and that's what I originally wore. It's shaped for being bent forward and sits awkwardly on top of your head when you are upright; if you had read my post carefully, you would have seen that.
