Wife wants a scrambler style bike. Looking for some input

...but im trying to explain the bike was sort of purpose built and by changing certain aspects, some of the qualities it was made for will be lost. as of now its a blast for me but i like riding, its nimble and handles like a dirt jumper.

LOL, when I make or buy things for my wife, I make sure that if she doesn't like it or loses interest, that it something I can live with and use. She wanted nice noise cancelling headphones, so I did the research and bought a pair, but even though I wanted a pair for myself, I waited to the requisite period where she's super happy with them, until the novelty wears off and they just sit on the table for a month or so, at which point I'm able to inherit them. They work great when she's telling me stuff she wants done (which also includes how to do it); and I just click the noise cancelling on, smile and nod.

She likes Surly's- wish i had built it out of a Karate Monkey or Krampus

I got my GF a pretty inexpensive GT Timberline many years ago. It has 26" wheels and a low end SunTour fork. I have since repurposed an old but much better set of my MTB wheels on it and better shifters. She loves that bike. It is a very pretty metallic green. She rides it great on the flats, we recently did 25 mile round trip with me pulling the dog in his trailer with my old Trek 8000 pedal bike. But when we go somewhere hillier like last year to Acadia National Park, again with me pulling the dog in his trailer on my Trek pedal bike around the carriage roads, she struggles and it becomes "no fun" and a long day for me. So her bike will likely get a TSDZ2 in the near future. Lesson: whatever it takes to make her happy will eventually make me happier.

My casual observation suggests that GFs do better with hub motors. Anecdotal but observed.

My ex-GF did fine with her low power hub motor bike, while my ex-wife still gets on great with my old BBS02... but she only runs it in high gear.

Yep. If she doesn’t like to pedal, why building her a PAS ???

She’ll be happier with an off the shelf urban scooter, that you will upgrade and improve over the years.

They have (kind of useless) pedals to make them legal ebikes. Women here like them a lot for city commuting. They can be parked on the street like motorcycles, not fragile to weather, key lock with steering lock and alarm. Pretty cheap too, and easy to upgrade for long range/faster speed, waterproof luggage, etc...

Not a sporty ride, but practical with a style. Women are not likely to become your sporting partner, and can’t appreciate the mechanics. They prefer all tech hidden behind a bodywork with color scheme.

This. 95% of my riding is solo or with my bike club. The GF recreational rides are the other 5%. Back in the day the boys in the club would discuss whether having a GF who could keep up riding with us would be a good thing and the consensus was a resounding "NO". There are only a rare few women who can ride with the fast guys and the ones who can are C_R_A_Z_Y! No offense ladies.

Yes, could be so. I just have zero experience with them... and would want one that can let HER pull the dog once in awhile. If all we did was the flat rides like last weekend a DD hub would probably work great but probably need a geared hub for the occasional hillier stuff. And she likes to pedal so it would have to be a torque sensor setup. No lame stinkin' PAS. I am sure the TSDZ2 (with cooling mods) can do all that and I am really comfortable installing them, opening them up, etc. I haven't messed with replacing bearings and torque sensors yet because I haven't had to but that shouldn't be too difficult. We'll see.

I was discussing with my 4 year old the other day about how when he gets a bit bigger and outgrows his current big boy bike that I have everything I need to build him an e-bike of his own. I then said that I couldn't wait to go on family rides together. That I would ride my Raptor, Mom could ride the Revive, and my son would have one all his own.

My wife immediately veto'd riding the Revive. Outright refused. She wants something else, tbd. No idea what it is that she will want, but apparently I'll be building something else for her.

Never assume that what you like is what she wants, no matter how good it might be.

...and to reiterate, if she doesn't want to pedal a mid drive is probably a poor choice. Unless she wants a mid drive, for reasons.

I don't know if she'll go for a scooter actually, she really likes the super 73 and that comes in all sorts of girly colors If you get the Z1. The problem is it has no range and balls. So pretty much as soon as I got it I would probably switch everything out. Since our usual ride is about 40 miles. It's a heavy bike and there are some hilly sections so I'll probably swap out the 500 W geared motor to a Mac or go with a BBSHD.

When I think about it, if I make it fast enough it may be fun to take for a quick rip around the neighborhood so I'm not totally opposed

As for the kids, I was thinking about building something but I really like the mondraker grommy

Can't you just buy the Super 73 frame and build upon that?
I bet somewhere in the back alley of Alibaba/Aliexpress you can get one.

Cheap enough to buy one complete.

Not a bad deal; looks like the Super 73 S2 since it has the suspension fork, which has a 31 inch seat height, in case that's a consideration. Might also be an issue if she likes the bike because of the cute gas tank battery

Seems expensive to me, not sure what stock frame could replace it. At first thought a bmx bike but a quick look is just an old banana bike, sometimes cheap sometimes not but wife won't dig that retroness.

Yep. I didn’t notice the gas tank missing. Sure they add it for a hundred $, and 2 rear shocks for another 50. :D

I think you’d better look for old delivery bikes, for the square stretched frame. But, as I remember them, they would make an XXL super 73

Just revisiting this thread a bit and wondering why the wifey wants a "scrambler" style bike. They look cool but don't seem like they'd be useful or comfortable for a normal longish ride. But then again as noted several times, best not to ask or wonder why, best just to get them what they want. ;)

lol, just saw these last few posts. True there are a bunch floating around on alibaba But it seems more cost-effective getting the complete ones. The only frame I found available by itself was from coast cycles and it is what Luna uses for their banana ebike. I think the frame was around $400 or so and shipping was like 300 on it so that's a big no-no

There's a company on Alibaba that has a pretty good reputation called Mario ebike and they sell a scrambler style with a BBSHD for like 1500 including an "ok-ish" looking 52v battery (I would probably have to upgrade right off the bat for more range)

There's a user selling surplus 13 S3P packs w Sanyo GA here now That are very long and flat and I was planning on trying to mount four together under the seat/top tube. That should give me about 2kwh So I'm thinking a reasonable 50+ miles of cruising at moderate speeds
