Wire Question

I've worked with a kind of wire that was really easy to deal with, flexible and "soft" for lack of a better word, and then I bought some at frys that sucked balls (damn near needed pliers to bend it) problem is I don't know shit about how wire is officially labeled or referred to except gauge, so I guess my question here is whats the best kind of wire to get for battery packs (for Current up to 40 Amps?)
