wiring 12v sla batteries help please

12 guage automotive wire should be good enough. 14 guage would be the minimum. Both easy to find in a car parts store, along with the right size blade connectors.

In the US, it's the yellow blade connectors.

BTW. Three sla's connected paralell is 12v. So you need to series connect them. Start with one battery. leave the positve to connect to the controller. Then connect the battery negative to the next battery positve. Do that again, and now you have left, the negative to connect to the controller.

Connected like this, you will need a 36v charger to charge them.

You can use a 12v charger IF you disconnect one of the batteries when charging and charge each battery separately. I have this setup on my bike and use a 12v charger.

Yes. that's true. Was trying not to get too much info at once to him.

But I thought since he was confused about series paralell voltage, he might be confused what charger to use to charge his 36v pack, without rearanging stuff. He'd connect the 36v charger to the same terminals as the controler. Each end of the string of batteries. So unplug controller, plug in charger would work fine for a 36v sla charger.

It is possible to charge at 12v, one battery at a time while series connected. Connect to the battery one battery at a time. Connect 12v charger to + and - like normal. Don't use two chargers at the same time.

Thanks for all the info, you all have guessed electrics are not my forte! I did realise I put parallel when I meant series, I found lots of pictures on Google how to wire them up (also how to make a harness so you can use a 12v charger) but no information about what gauge wire to use, I have a 36v charger coming so no need to make a harness. Thanks for being nice to the noobs, this is the best site I have been on for help!

You can charge each battery separately without disconnecting anything. Although I'd make sure the power to the controller is off so you don't accidentally hit the throttle and send everything flying.
