Amazon packaging is infamously bad, but today I think they really set a new level.

I use Amazon regularly and enjoy their service, but Jeez, how does a company like Amazon allow this much money to be wasted.

This order for for FOUR 20" Schwalbe Marathon tires. That is ALL that was on this order. Because I am Amazon Prime, this came UPS 2 day air. You might be tempted to think that the two sets of tires came from different warehouses, but nope.... same return address on both labels.

The measurements of the tires is (without any squishing, twisting, or even compression) is 5"x19"x19" = 1805 c.i.

The two boxes together measure 21"x22"x31" = 14,322 c.i.

Almost eight times the volume of the tires.

All four of the tires would have EASILY fit in one box, but they sent them in TWO!!

Aye Caramba!!

Anybody have a similar or (I shudder to think) worse story??

In a day of 4 gallon gas..... really?

I wouldn't call it the worst packaging ever, its just uneconomic for them. I think it's good that they leave a lot of room for the items you buy, it's a lot better then leaving no room.

i got some windshield wiper blades and the box was big enuff to hold 4 batteries. there was just a tube for the rototiller along with them so it was totally wasted space. i think they get a deal from fedex where nothing matters about size. when i go to UPS, it is just inches and pounds make big bucks.

Wire bead tires can be folded (Think figure 8 to start) with no problems. At least the 26" ones. 20" tires might be hard to fold.

I once got a 25x35x7mm bearing. ONE BEARING. in a 12"x4"x18" box. A four dollar bearing, and four dollar flat rate next day air. I have no idea how that's sustainable when digikey just charged me 30 dollars for 2nd day air on some silly little sensora that may weigh 10 geams.

Sounds like Amazon has an employee problem.

If the person that packed that order worked for me he/she would be out on their ass, shit out of a job.

How did that link get in there? I didn't link to anything.... :?

Hehe, sounds like your computer has adware that turns text in your browser to links. I don't see a link in your post.

I had a problem with that, one time, and it was on my server. I later realized that when I copied some html over, I didn't remove the adware link in the code, so links started popping up all over my page. It had me going for a little while... (I'm ultra paranoid of viruses)

I bought some 3M DP460 epoxy recently and the little injector came in a 9x9x6" box! A padded envelope would have done the trick. You could have fit at least 50 units in that box!

Hah - you guys have never had an order from Dell or HP?

HP are infamous for using large boxes (12"X12"X12") that only contain 2 screws, or a 3 page invoice - or EMI compliance/safety documents.

i suspect what happens is that the computer at the shipping warehouse decides what box to deliver to the packing station with the order. the compute program doesn't know how to figure out how to make stuff fit in a smaller box by reorienting things in a box. in my case they could put the wiper blades diagonally across a thin box but it knew there was a second item and then that may have kicked it up in volume and since it was already expecting to use a box with 20"+ for the 19" wiper blades, the new addition of the tube for the rototiller made the next size up box just tootoo big.

I bought a couple of Kenda tires through Amazon and they sent them out at separate dates because they ran out of stock. The first one arrived in what looked like 2 boxes fused into one. The second one was in a normal size tire/wheel box.
