Hyena's e-bike builds (now with HD video)

WOW! that looks like fun I wish I had some trails like that to ride on, nice bike Hyena.

Great video Jay, you are right when you say you can't use the power on those kinds of tight trails. Its funny because just about anybody can hold the throttle wide open on a fire road or roadway, but to go fast on tight trails like the one in some of your videos takes skill, ability, and talent. You got it. I think you would be a good enduro racer. Thanks for making the vids and please keep them coming.

Wow, thats some serious get up and go there Jay! I'm sure you were pushing it for the video but it reminded me of a RC car with a cam on it.. power to weight must be gettinf up there, it would be interesting to see the results of an accelerometer. that 24s config seems to be working pretty well for you :) but of corse you must be considering the next options? 30s with 4115 fets? I saw your post on Lyens sales thread. hopefully you can sell some more kits and use the $$$ to upgrade. that would be rediculous but awsome.
edit
Also wanted to ask how you set up lipo, balance charge? or just external plug in pack or something? and also are you concerned about the fets max voltage (100v?) so run the cells <4.1v?

Thanks e-biker.

Very cool video but it always looks like your handle bars are on back wards with the fish eye Go Pro.
Actually it's not the gopro. haha
They're mx style for a start so look different to normal mtb bars, they're also cut down so I can ride at speed through tight tracks and gaps (ie exactly as above)
Lastly they're rotated forward about 20 degrees, "tuned" to feel good for my height, style of riding etc.

That's buddy. I'm just a guy who makes his bike go fast, then rides it fast. haha
Yeah back when I started hotting up my car and did a few track days (purely for fun) people would say to me "what are you doing ? You're not a race driver, you can't do that"
My attitude in life is "how hard can it be?" I'll have a go at anything and if I suck too badly at it my broken body will let me know. :p

Thanks for making the vids and please keep them coming
Will do! Had a day off today and collected some good footage. Went for a 60km ride which is futher than I usually go and the majority of it was uneventful but there were 2 locations I decided to 'set up shop' for some different angles. One of them was very naughty and I had to make a hasty retreat. Wanna guess where I was ?

Nah man, that's how I roll
I often will cruise along big open tracks or take it easy over the rough stuff or steep rocky DH where I could ride it out but also risk getting myself and the bike smashed up if something goes wrong.

it reminded me of a RC car with a cam on it..
Heh that's something I'd like to do in another video. The probable is this Hyena is usually a lone wolf so I don't have a wing man to roll or video with.

I was spewing today my gopro went flat. I I stopped in at maccas for some lunch and these young blokes in a skyline were checking out the bike, said it was sick etc but nearly died when I said how much they cost. They left and I followed them out and he drove in typical skyline driver style, reving it up in 1st and backing off right where all the young girls were sitting so they could hear his fully sick blow off valve. As he made a right turn around a large round about and shifted into 2nd I shot up the inside of him and blew his doors off  He quickly caught up obviously but he cleaned it out in 2nd to catch up and I was pretty much at top speed by the time he went past. I got a thumbs up as they hit traffic ahead. Would have made for a funny vid.

That was probably 2 years ago. haha.
But yeah I'm tempted to go to higher voltage but the 4115s don't take as much current so I dunno. 30S would probably be nice though I'd probably go to 35S and get my moneys worth :p

Also wanted to ask how you set up lipo, balance charge? or just external plug in pack or something? [/quote]
In general or the booster ?
In general I've got the internal 18S18ah pack that is bulk charged to 4.17v/cell average and then balanced with the BC168 once every 10 or so rides or topped up to 4.2v with it if I'm going for a long ride where I want to use close to max capacity. Balancing is done via my centronics plug in place of the old CA cutout.

file.php

For the booster pack I just use the BC168 through the balance leads. It's only temporary for now, unless I rewire my internal pack which I'm not hugely keen to do.

are you concerned about the fets max voltage (100v?) so run the cells <4.1v?
Yeah a little. I never gun it hard off the line, usually just ease it off until the voltage drops down to 98-99v which is pretty much straight away. I typically charge to 4.17v as above which puts it a shade over 100v but, yeah. I normally recommend to others that if they're using 4110s to limit to 23S. Alot of people get away with 24S but there's also the risk for failure and it's not terribly rare.

None of your bikes have bells

Heh, when t3sla was up from Melbourne the other week and test rode my stealth fighter, of all the things he could comment on he proclaims "it doesn't have a bell!"
I told him where I normally ride on this bike there's no people around to hear me coming, and dirt bikes ain't going to hear it over their engine (although the thought of ringing a bicycle bell before overtaking them is the stuff of comedy!)

This clip from my ride today is for you t3sla :p

Come to think of it, if you don't sell it with a bell and reflectors then it is clearly not for road use.....Smart :x

About that, I might be back for a decent time for work non the less.
The along with the DH bike and a Go Pro  So it will be on like donkey kong

Heh you should have used the picture of me when I too had cancer, a bald head and a goatee (a friend at the time said I had a very walter white thing going on)
I get the BB reference but not the first pic, if that's supposed to be someone I recognise...

Cool, bring your skateboard too. And learn how to fly a quadcopter, and then we're really in business. heh.

Speaking of not being in business, as I thought google has canned my ass :(

They should have just replied with THIS LINK, it conveys the same message.
I wouldn't mind betting they didnt even look into it, it's an auto reply to an even more generic link that just points back to the same info they gave before. They won't respond to any further inquiries or name specifically what the issue is because it's all automated.
There are other options for making a token amount of pocket money on the side but not though youtube given google own it now. It'd have to stay with the blog and I try and drive traffic through there, post all my vids there as well and put a link back at the end of all my YT clips (with/with a note saying "F you google for banning my adsense account. PS check out my blog where I'm running non-google adds") :p

The good news is I don't have to squeeze into one of my wifes dresses and shoot a victory / defeat vid.

The face is from the old guy in the wheel chair who only communicated by tapping on the bell

ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding...

Though I know those things are legal requirements... (bells, not old men in wheelchairs) I hate the bloody things, think they are rude n patronising, where a simple call of "passing" or "coming through" is a lot more personal an polite.. or the alternative roar of "OI wake the frock up you frocktard" has powers far greater than any bell...

Plus I gets the irrits when some lycra bells everything he passes... ohh a dog ding!, A person running on the left well out of the way DING... a duck on the river! DINGDING! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I does remember one time, zipping along behind a couple taking up both lanes whilst running I let out a huge "Woooooooohoooooooo" as I came up to em, they pulled left and the bloke yelled out as I passed "best bell ever!"

So how's that line trimmer going for you now Jay? Manage to try a 6S LiPo pack yet?

I'm curious to know since, I needed a line trimmer myself, and similarly didn't want to spend much...so basically copied your approach. Bought the exact same one from Bunnings today, and yes, the included battery is pathetic. Only lasts me about 3min on my thick weedy lawn.

I'm thinking I will probably get a bunch of 6S LiPo bricks and associated charger, balancer, kit, etc for my Fighter soon. It would be easier to just chuck in an extra brick for the line trimmer if it can handle the voltage. Not that a 5S brick would be a huge problem, but I like to keep things consistent.

Cheers,

Those are some serious electric trimmers. Just when I thought I have seen it all, along comes hot rod trimmers   8)

Yeah my new commuter bike was lacking a bell for a few weeks and I'd just call out. Since fitting a bell though I always ring it to give warning on bike paths (if people dont have headphones in) as people often randomly switch sides (usually right as you're about to pass...) A few times people have nearly jumped out of their skin as they take their time moving over and by the time they do I'm right on them. I never pass pedestrians fast (I usually brake right before I pass) but I think some hear the bell and subconciously judge the distance behind and then freak out when 5 seconds later I'm right on them.

Haven't had cause to but will pull it out this weekend and see how it goes.

but I like to keep things consistent.
I did the same for many years but now I have the BC168s any voltage goes and it's easy as pie to charge any voltage. I can actually hard wire the batteries in and just use the balance taps to charge.

Yeah alright you win :p
Was that a converted petrol one ? I'm guessing it was with a rotating flexible rod that drives the head ? Most of the electric ones seem to have the motor directly in the head with just the battery up the end. I imagine there'd be a bit of an efficiency issue, not that it'd be a power problem with a big outrunner like that.

OK back to bikes, here's my latest clip.
I played with a few different effects this time in post. Pity I left the gopro in 1080p 30fps, a few of the shots would have looked good in slo mo. Ah well, next time. And another F U to google for canning my adsense account and my funding source for that 120 fps hero 3 black. Meh, I guess I'll buy it anyway :p

Ah I figured this worked.
So say you have 12s, you can charge a single 6s cluster while they are in series.
I can understand that working, but two units not working as your need to have isolate channels/ground.

Roger, Roger.
So as per the charge plug pictured at the top of this page, there's 3 x 6S JST plugs coming off it. They're all terminated onto a single plug for convenience but only one at a time is connected to the charger otherwise fireworks. But yeah if you isolated the grounds you could use multiple chargers. That said I bulk charge and then just give the occasional top off with the balance charger - it's rarely needed.

we did see some drifting in his ultra cool short video. So Jay, whats the answer?
Heh, I must admit that I did spend a fair bit of time driving sideways in my younger years. A mate in a car club at the time used to joke that I should rewire the blinkers in my car so that when I put the left blinker on the left front and rear right would flash (because the rear was going the opposite way  ) On the bike it ain't so easy but I have a crack at it :)
I suck more at wheelies, if anyone wants to see a video of trying to sustain them at the local oval the other day ?
Getting the front wheel up is no problem but my balance ain't much chop and the bike wants to keep accelerating too rapidly once I'm on the power.

Hopefully my next post in this thread will be pics of a new toy that I'm expecting this arvo.

maybe it can help : http://www.bikeradar.com/mtb/fitness/article/how-to-wheelie--19946/

when moving throttle, does your controller change V or A or Both ? I guess, it change V and the motor ask for amp ...
In kelly controller there is a Speed mode/Torque mode/or both
This mode has nothing to do with the the halls spacing or advancing of the timing but is just the different ways the throttle adjusts the outputted power.
in speed mode and adjust the throttle you are basically adjusting the output voltage on the phase lines of your motor. So if you keep the throttle at 20% you will only go to 20% of your top speed (ignoring all laws of physics)
In Torque mode you are strictly adjusting the current proportional to the throttle. The means even at 20% throttle you could reach 100% speed.
isn't it possible for someone to program this in lyen or Crystalite controllers ?
do you have your rear brake on right or left side ? having it on left could help dealing it kind of brake with the left foot braking style  drifter with a goal :D

I guess it's easier to pull wheelies in torque mode...

Yeah I've been meaning to have a play with torque based throttle with the V3 CA but havent gotten around to it yet.

Here's a clip of me sucking :p

Thats the learning cure with electric bikes. I can ride wheelies through some gears on my old gassers, but I am having a more difficult time with the bomber. That and I haven't practiced wheelies at all on my bike. Maybe I will have a wheelie session on the bomber tomorrow.

Rick

Hey Jay

Not bad first attempt, trick it so feather your rear brake to stop you going to far back, you dont need much to find the sweet spot, on a normal mountain bike I can wheelie for miles even with no front wheel in, just takes practice, I havent tried it on my ebikes because the batteries are on the back, will gaff them in the frame on one of my rides and give it a try.
