The bike is a Himiway "Cruiser". I recharge the battery when it's off of the bike, in the house. Bring the charged battery into the cold / dry garage, insert in the cradle on the bike, and sometimes get a pretty substantial static electricity "pop".

I worry that could be a bad thing for my electronics.

What am I doing wrong / should I do instead?

Does the battery have an on/off switch?

It's common for sparking from connecting a battery to happen when it's been disconnected for long enough that the capacitors in the controller have discharged. When reconnected, they draw high current for a short period to recharge, and therefore the spark/arc. This may be what is happening in your situation. If so, you should keep an eye on the contacts to make sure they don't deteriorate or cause a loose connection.
