    Kelly PID Parameters

OK, so it's not the derivative? Best to leave it at the default value of 1000?

    Kelly PID Parameters

In Kelly's documentation for the KLS-N controllers it discusses adjusting PID parameters to control acceleration rate/behavior. It, besides the proportional and integral parameters, mentions something called "Speed Err limit". I can't figure out what that means and was unable to get an...

    Kelly KLS Controller Optimizing.

This is an interesting thread for me as I have just purchased/installed a KLS6030N for a Venom E-Grizzly quad (I didn't like the throttle response characteristics and lack of config capability for the OEM controller). So far, so good and am about to try adjusting the PID variables as yourself...

    Kelly KLS6030N Working.

Thanks to both for your comments - I feel more confident about it operating correctly now. The motor was not entirely motionless - it jerked a wee bit, in both directions IIRC. Actually the motor itself may have moved more as it remained connected to the axle/differential and all I was...

    Kelly KLS6030N Working.

Finally received the Kelly KLS6030N. Hooked it up on the bench and ran the ID Angle procedure - the motor made a few sounds like it was trying to move but did not actually rotate. But, the program reported success after a minute or so so I connected the throttle and it seems to work as it...

    Homemade Axial flux PM motor

Interesting project. A couple of questions if I could: How will the motor be mounted? Metal brackets fastened to the outside of the stator disk? Will the PETG be strong enough in this situation? The two shaft bearings seem awfully close together. Will they be strong enough (along with the...

Article on Hall sensors in BLDC motors

Yes, I suspected the golf cart motor thing was probably bogus as well. Anyway, UniteMotor got back to me and said the motor has 4 pole pairs (8 poles) so I guess I'll go with that even though my Hall sensor state change measurement suggested 10. As well, they have a Canadian rep who they...

Article on Hall sensors in BLDC motors

Thanks again for all the help. :D I guess then I'll just hook it up color to color and let'er rip. Hopefully the IA procedure will sort it all out. BTW, I emailed UniteMotor earlier today asking how many poles the motor has and they just replied - 4 pole pairs. That doesn't jibe with my...

Article on Hall sensors in BLDC motors

OK, thanks - I kinda expected there was more to it than I first expected. You may recall from a recent previous thread that I am attempting to mate a Kelly controller to a motor of somewhat unknown characteristics. I am concerned that the color coding of the Hall and phase wiring on the motor...

Article on Hall sensors in BLDC motors

This Digi-Key article is a good description of how the Hall sensors work in a BLDC motor: https://www.digikey.com/en/blog/using-bldc-hall-sensors-as-position-encoders-part-1 One thing though I noticed in particular is the following: 'Summary No matter which single sensor output square wave...

How to find number of poles?

Thanks amberwolf for the interesting info. Was notified yesterday my controller has shipped and should be here Monday so we will see what happens. BTW, took a look at the Kelly forum - surprisingly little activity there and a lot of queries with no reply. :( Also tried to sign up but...

How to find number of poles?

I think I am finally getting that - I've been trying to relate cogs to poles and it may well be a futile exercise as there are two unknowns - number of poles and number of slots in the stator(?). Anyhow, thanks for pointing out it is not necessary. OK, understood. According to Kelly, they...

How to find number of poles?

OK, I guess my cogging arithmetic was a bit of a stretch... :) But I am confused as to how 46 magnets have 23 poles or is that 23 pole pairs (thought BLDC motors always had an even number of poles)? And, does DD mean Direct drive? OK, I'll start with 10 and see if the angle routine passes.

How to find number of poles?

Hey amberwolf, I hooked up the Hall sensors to +5V and measured 10 state changes (0v to 3V to 0 to 3 to 0 to 3 to 0 to 3 to 0 to 3 to 0) in one rotation. Sounds like 10 poles as it could not be 10/2 = 5 which is not an even number(?) I think that also might tie in to the 60 cogs per rotation...

How to find number of poles?

Thanks to you both for replying. amberwolf, if I understand this correctly, number of poles = number of pulses (state switches) from one of the Hall sensors per rotation. SerjeoWN, from the YouTube it appears, number of poles = 2 * number of pulses (voltage) from one phase per revolution. I'm...
