Surly Pugsley: E-bike possible? Or just crazy?

Have you looked at the new Salsa Mukluk? I'd been thinking along the same lines recently, so I'm intrigued to see what, if anything, you get up to. Keep us posted.

    Astro 3210 group buy?

Hi Matt; When do you need an answer re: a "definite purchase" commitment. I'm interested, but haven't quite sorted out what I'd do with one just yet so have held off making any requests. Greg

Fitting freewheels to splined freehub drivers

Perhaps a trivial detail, but would you still use the Dual Drive shifter? I'm imagining that part of it is unnecessary. IE the rear cassette shifting capability. Options? Greg

Fitting freewheels to splined freehub drivers

So back to the topic at hand. Am I correct to think that two freewheels will fit in the space where a 9 speed cassette would normally go on a SRAM dual drive? Is the idea that the inner one will get a very large sprocket for a direct drive and the outer one a smaller sprocket that lines up...

Fitting freewheels to splined freehub drivers

The June issue of Outside magazine had an article titled "The Day the Insults Died: Angry bike mechanics are going extinct....." I guess the LBS you were in hasn't gotten the message yet. Greg

    Tex from Texas

Welcome Tex; Looking at your builds I realize I want to be able to design and build bike frames. Could you suggest a reference text or place to start? Cheers Greg

If you had a million dollars to invest in e-bikes

I recently had a conversation with a client about the need to get the ideas on the table before we started to assess their merit. My intention with the post was to hear some different view points about e-bikes and what might be missing in the marketplace. Churn things up as it were. One idea...

If you had a million dollars to invest in e-bikes

Hey everyone thanks for the feedback! Give me a few days to digest the suggestions and do a bit more research. It is going to be a busy week getting the roof on the workshop and house. I'm back to school for the next 4 weekends but keep the ideas coming and I'll follow up in a bit. Cheers Greg

If you had a million dollars to invest in e-bikes

Hi All; I came into some money recently and i have been thinking about areas that could use some R&D effort for those that are interested in e-bike mods. My interest lies mostly in full suspension bike and enclosed trike designs for the home builder. IE I think I'll leave battery, motor and...

    When is your first snowfall?

N&V; Would a trike be any better in the snow or would you just get hung up? I'm imagining that you can ride in the tire tracks with a bike. Greg

    Direct-drive 3220 setup with a 3-Speed Hub...

LFP; I hope you document your experiences with pictures for those of us who are visual imaginatively challenged. Greg

    When is your first snowfall?

Hi N & V; God I hope we don't get snow anytime soon! But then again, we are just south of 49th parallel here on Saltspring Island. The metal roofing on the new workshop is only about 50% done and we just got the titanium underlayment down on the house roof today. It has been mostly T-shirt...

    D's RC Drive Kona DC1

Hi D; I'm curious about the proposed seat post mounting of the motor on your bike. Doesn't mounting the motor to the seat post create an issue with the chain from the motor to the rear sprocket or do you figure that it is possible to deal with slack with an idler? Am I missing something? Greg

    The Grinhill Mk2 RC-motor drive

How do RC boats deal with water ? Is there anything to be transferred to bikes in the rain? Greg

    Innexpensive, federally legal trikes?

Hi Matt; Personally I think you are on the right track, if I understand what you are saying. IE modestly priced legal electric/hybrid trikes, but that have a built in upgrade capability. At least that is the direction that I'm interested in taking the concept for myself. I don't need to go as...

Holmes' #6 Le Toy II (vids page 11)

I really like the look of the Motorcycle tires and rim. Just reread your posts and realized that you were going to try the same set up on your rear wheel "if you did a non-hub build"... Missed that the first time round. Greg

    Direct-drive 3220 setup with a 3-Speed Hub...

Hi Gary; I must be a bit slow with how this all works together. Would it be possible to post some pictures of the intermediate steps. Kind of a slot A fits into slot B kind of thing for the assembly challenged amongst us. Cheers Greg

    Building a pusher trailer

Hey Crash; I have done up a single wheeled version that I'm still tinkering with. Mine mounts to the seat post. I used the e-bike components that I had on hand from my first build to prove the concept. (C-lyte 406, 36V 10 Ah NiMH, Drain Brain...) Shifted from a 26" to a 20" wheel blah, blah...

Direct drive and nonhub motors in a FS bike

Oh and yes I'm familiar with Greyborg's build. A bit heavier than I was hoping for and with a hub motor. Been there done that. This is the attraction of the RC motor builds to me. IE Is it possible to develop a relatively simple light weight system for a FS XC bike? Greg

Direct drive and nonhub motors in a FS bike

Interesting that you guys should be talking about weather protection. Lately my boat building exploits have lead me into composite construction builds. Stitch and Glue, 4 -6 mm ply encased in epoxy. Light and strong. I've built a couple of kayaks and a 14' runabout as a test case for a a...
