1KW On board Charging station

I need to update this thread.
I have modified the charger with what sounds like a Jet engine
I took a 12V 2A 24W brushless PC fan and bypassed the temperature sensor
Sounds like it is going to take off. . .

At the higher current levels (1.1KW and above) the charger was overheating and shutting down.

Not any more

I will post up some pictures tonight.

On the BMC front I am waiting on 1 shipment and 2 emails.
When the shipment comes in I will begin work on the monitoring circuit.
Should not take long to build a proof of concept.

Here are those pics:

Here is the new fan installed. I cut a notch out of the lid of the power supply. You can see the old fan next to it.

With the current configuration I am pushing 1.1KW into the pack in the CC mode.
This CA reading says it all. . .

Ok, so technically not installed on the bike but clearly mobile. This setup is only 24" of duct tape away from bad ass.

NIce

I hads the same issue with my C-A when i connected the charger plug positive wire right after the controller's shunt.

That's also what i wanted so the C-A can indicate the charging power and Ah goes back to near zero when fully charged

the only bad thing is that the total Ah overall record aslo goes back too if i remember correctly :?

How do you appreciate to see the Wh display changing really fast ? .. like one or two to full charge!! 8)

WHAT?!?

I didn't think it did that. . .
Ok, I am at 534 Ah right now.
108 cycles and 1023 miles.
I will check again tomorrow

That would not make sense. . . Justin is into regen so I imagine he set it up to be more like an odometer.

Yea. . . The more I think about it, I dont think it rolls back the total ah.

Even if it did, it is a MUST when charging at the crazy rates I do. Gota keep an eye on it and I cant use my Watts up. btw, blew another watts up. Tried to bring it back like you said with a RX pack and it did not work. Guess 100V was too much for it.

I am not 100% of my statement about the C-A... anyway can you clarify that?

Also, I also blown my Wattsup meter and i repaired it. it's a little voltage regulator IC that blow in case where you obvervolt it.. my Astroflight wattmeter blown too.. and it is repaired now. search for al little 8 pin soic

Doc

Methods you are the man! How long does it take to charge your pack now? How much does that charger weigh? How hard would it be to add a timer to something like that, so it could just shutoff at like 80-90% capacity? :?

I'm just happy to see that he is charging this outdoors. :)

Doc, I have several blown WattsUp units. I took one apart yesterday, and I do see the tiny 8-pin SOIC. Do you have a part number for these? I'd like to see the pinout. I have a bunch of standard 78L05s, which are in a TO-92 package. I'd love to make one of these work. :)

You dont need a timer.
The power supply is set right to 100.8V (or your HVC)
The supply will naturally move into CV mode
Once you get up to like 100.79V the current will drop down to micro amps (or whatever your leakage rate is).
Not to be confused with a trickle charger.

If I wanted to go to sleep I would set a timer for an arbitrary time like an hour. Just us any old $5 light timer from any store.

P.S. Dont try this at home kids

Actually that was just a coincidence. I was charging outside because there was a bunch of crap in the door way.
Normally I charge that in my kitchen

It boils down to knowing the pack, knowing it is in balance, knowing the charger, knowing the risk. . . You know what I mean. In my opinion it is safer to use the supply since I know there is no way to accidentally set it to 4S instead of 3S like what happened to you back in the day. I have a healthy respect but at the same time I have no fear. I work with stuff at my "real job" that is so much more dangerous than this it is almost laughable.

I have been tempted to jump in on the Lipo bashing threads but I don't have the energy to argue
I think it just boils down to some of us are willing to accept a greater level of risk.
I am the type of guy that will drive a car that I built myself at 165mph on the freeway. . .
(I have a datalog of that run  Dont worry, it was at 3am and nobody was out but me and the guy that got hit by the splash guard that blew out from under my fender due to the pressure)

Amazing how long it takes to stop when you are going that fast :|

oh ...

and my friend and i have figured out how to effectivly prevent any fires out of a lipo battery.

video to come shortly

Doc,

That little 8pin SOIC - when overvolting how badly?

Any chance of tweaking the regulator so that it would work with higher voltage (internally I mean)... I want to use 2 of them with a 15S pack (to measure input and output into the pack continuously)

Thanks!

-Mike
