2012 Top 10 E-S eBikes of the Year

I have swung back to Timma2500's Intense M3 as my personal favorite.

013.JPG

I know its not a custom machining masterpiece but in my opinion its the perfect example of doing everything right to produce both high performance and high reliably that still looks very much like the original bike. Fantastic attention to detail.

Thankyou Kepler and Full Throttle, you guys are too kind :oops:
All the other bikes pictured in this thread really are top notch builds, if this were a competition for a prize i sure as hell wouldn't like to be the judge! :lol:

I wonder if it'd be better to break it down into more specific categories?

Such as:

*Top recumbent
*Top offroad bike - hub
*Top offroad bike - non hub (in wheel)
*Top stealthy build
*Top general use bike
*Top mechanical achievement
*Top electrical acheivement
*Top road racing bike - unlimited power
*Top road racing bike under say 5kw...

That way each bike gets recognised for being good in it's own relm. Plus there have been soooo many great builds this year, it'd be impossible to pick one single bike over the others.

Was just a thought! :wink:

Paul :D

i think that Paul on the right track
as there are a ton of fab builds out there and some builders can not get there hands on some of the special tools to build a super bike but thay still build some fab stuff
this way i think more E-S builders get a chance to get there name and build in the hall of fame which there build is built on /ie// speed .looks teck . ect ect .i think this is going to be fun :lol:

Timma2500,

That is a very sweet ride, you have my vote for sure. By the way I noticed Zero Motorcycles sells the motor, battery, controller, etc. If you have some free time maybe you can slap together something for us. 54HP and 70ft-lbs of torque sounds like it could be a lot of fun :D

Not bad, not bad. The best of everything all designed and built from scratch by his own two hands... But perhaps you missed that another guy ordered a regular HX35 hubmotor and set it into dropouts of a white frame that has a matching white white colored fork. :roll: :roll: :roll: :roll: :roll:

:mrgreen:

guess that would be me?... :roll: maybe its someone else and I am paranoid?....but I actually did quite a bit more than that ....not as advanced as dogati for sure but have schlumph 2.5, GPS, motorcycle rims and tires,and 104 volt system...for my first bike its not bad for what I have to work with didn't build it with my own two hands I apologize profusely for that

I would nominate a steatlh fighter with a 2.5 schlumph instead of a 1.6,better forks,motocycle or moped rims and tires,and a higher volt system.... about as good as it can be (at least whats in production) until someone makes a decent geared hub that withstand a great mid drive

A hall of fame would be a great option. Split into different categories just like Timma2500 suggested. Maybe the admins would introduce that to ES updating it on a yearly basis.
Here´s my idea for a listing. Feel free to bring along your ideas please. :)

1. Best e-bike build ever! ( Craftsmanship, reliability, design, ingenuity ) -My personal winner here is the Dogati.-
2. The fastest e-bike ever.
3. The most powerful e-bike ever. ( Motor wise )
4. The finest example of craftsmanship.
5. The years #1 bike voted for by the members here. :mrgreen:

Yes, as long as it has pedals and can be moved around by muscle power alone it´s a still a bike. No matter how many watts or gigawatts. :)

Sounds good to me - you should start a new thread for 2013. Looking forward to the nominations and eventual vote. Oh, but USA federal consumer protection ...
Is My E-Bike Legal? USA Ebike Law
For what its worth, if you are selling an e-bike, the consumer product safety act HR 727 defines an e-bike as—
* Two or three wheels
* Fully operable pedals
* 750 watts maximum
* Maximum speed of less than 20-MPH on the motor only, on level ground, with a 170 pound rider.
But agree that would be pretty boring.

I'd like to see a category for "best" that somehow takes that into account as "best street legal."

Arkmundi,
Those rules are only relative to whether it's classified as a motor vehicle of some kind for federal purposes, importation, taxes, etc. What is legal on the road as a bicycle is determined by state law. eg California has a 1000W limit. As far as high powered home-builts, simply call them for off road use and use whatever power you want. That or simply ignore what the government has to say, since this year more than any other they have proven absolutely incompetent to make useful rules. Instead their MO, when not simply stealing from whoever doesn't line their pockets, is to create mountains of laws and regulations that ultimately only stifle individuals and small to medium size businesses and enrich lawyers.

On topic, as a believer in KISS the Dogati never did anything for me. For this year I like Dlogic's bike as well as Drunkskunk's bike that both looks good but it's so big he could just lift the front wheel and run directly over any of us like we were nothing more than a speed bump. :twisted:

In Germany the limit for a moped is 4KW.
That´s a lot of power. :mrgreen:

The downside is that you have to get a TÜV approval, meaning the bike needs CE Lights, tires, brakes and handlebars.
I´m just in from another 78 Km round trip through the forests near my house. Since getting it street legal is the only way, work on this issue is currently in progress.
