I did a search on the Shenzhen Unite motors and found a number of comments, but most seemed to be on older brushed models or hub motors. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this motor: http://szunitemotor.en.made-in-china.com/product/uobQOygDAPVl/China-BLDC-Gearmotor.html

I have emailed them for more info, esp a power curve. It is not a tremendously efficient motor but I am thinking, for my first ebike project, I might want to go with off the shelf components to make it more simple. I have little in the way of fabricating tools. I am very interested in an outrunner but I think I need some practice first. Also, living in China, if I go with a motor like this Unite - and associated controller, I can find parts for it almost anywhere.

I am considering the 1000 watt motor. It is overkill, but my experience with machines of all kinds says that overpowered usually means longer life and a cushion of protection - yes, I know I have to stay with the parameters of the performance curve of an overpowered motor. From reading posts here, it is likely that I will have to jump to 48volts. I would prefer to stay with 36v because within the past year in China, the factories have started putting out 36 lixx batteries 10 ah for about 60% of what I see advertised online from the more well established companies that export. Yes, I need to do some research, but my experience tells me that once a whole industry produces a product they have massive economies of scales working for them, as well as probable subsidies.

Any input is appreciated. It is my hope to be cruising long distances on this bike, i.e. using the motor for hours at a time.

If you want an off the shelf cheap non frock brushless setup why not just buy one of the cyclone kits?

That is a good point and will revisit that decision. I am finding that as I do more homework, as I learn more, I find that I often have to rethink prior decisions. When I look at the Cyclone kit and the pics of this motor, I wouldn't be surprised if Unite is the subcontractor for cyclone - not this exact motor, but one other motor they have on their site. This Unite motor has gear reduction, which makes the motor put out about 500 rpm - that was one attraction. The Cyclones run at over 3K rmps, so need the gear reduction. It does say, however that the Unite motor is >80% efficient (low). I am not sure if this is because of the (poor) construction of the motor or because of the built in gear reduction. I don't know how efficient the cyclone motor is "at the wheels", after the gear reduction. The website claims 93% or 97% but I am not sure how that is measured.

Good food for thought.

Hi pengyou,

Motor to run for a few hours. ? what is the range you like to input ? Target range goal ?

what is the total range you intend to run ? 50km/h continous = 100Km/ 2hours = 1550watts at least or even more is
there any motor can do lesser then 1300watts for 100km , i think Bmc motor can achieved that. unlike a engine motor bike
no need to worry about watts.

i really think Long range riding sounds more like seating in a car travelling from One town to another 150km. if you have notice in here there is thread on,
" have any one Gone above 100miles ", i can see very few people can do that. As for me 95km will takes me a few days to complete a test on my lifepo4 48v 20hr (710.3watts used) on my CHM motor. some guys can do further range, But his butt don't allow him to do further range. if that person have travel on his ebike after 85km, im sure he won't dare to speed 50km/h, himself will be too tired to handle his ebike properly, accident can happen. for many hours of running a ebike without any worries,, is best to build a hub motor.

cheers
