Add-On Brake Handle Switch?

As I fiddle around with my Kelly regen controller, it dawned on me that I may end up needing a brake switch, as Jozzer told me. I'm hoping I won't need one. But, if I do end up needing a brake switch, I'd like to find a small switch that I can add-on to my existing brake handle.

I can't use the brake switches that come with ebike kits, because my handles are integrated with the shifters. So, I need a seperate small switch that I can attach to the handle itself, and will actuate when I hit the brakes.

I was thinking of a small normally-closed momentary micro-switch, that will pop out to close when I pull on the brake lever.

Any suggestions for a small switch? Type? price? etc.

At the bottom of this page rkosiorek describes his magnet and reed switch solution, I vaguely recall reading that someone was selling something similar as well. Might have been some one in the UK? Can't remember.

Or since you may be looking for a new throttle, get one with a push button.

I was also thinking of this option, but I don't know where to get one without buying the tail light it comes with, then canabilizing one.

I not only designed these but i also sold them as a kit. i did run out of stock . i will be making another batch in a month or two.

in the mean time Ypedal bought a whack of them for his installs and may have a few left. you can either PM him on this list or you can go to his website:

also a Canadian ebike dealer in the Ottawa area bought a few of them. Jeurgen can be reached at

these are complete units with peel and stick rubber mounts, switches, magnets, wiring, etc.

I've resorted to try and canabalize a switch from this little cheapy light one can get from DealExtreme. It is one of those LED brake lights, that has a tiny cable mounted switch.

I figure it should work perfectly for a brake switch. I can install it on my rear brake cable. This way, I don't need to run a wire all the way up to the handlebars for a switch on the brake lever.
