How do you add pictures to a post?

Thanks, Deron.

Quickest way is to upload images to the ES server, to do this use the 'browse'
button below the text editor (the box you tye your message in) this will open up a window viewing files on YOUR pc, navigate to the pic you wont to display, click 'Ok' the name of your pic will appear next to the 'browse' button...simple click the 'add file' button and your done, the pic will show in your post...

KiM
What is "ES server"?

It's the computer where what you post on here goes. So attaching a picture directly here put it on the server.

As opposed to hosting the pictures somewhere else, like Photobucket etc, and just linking to them.
That caused a lot of people's pictures to disappear from old posts after they started charging for hosting.

This forum wont let me add a 250kB picture.

I just tried to upload ten pics of varied sizes.

One uploaded. Got error message on all the rest.

Maybe it was a temporary glitch? Was the image that uploaded supposed to be a tiny pinkynail? (too small to be called a thumbnail  ) It's filesize (208.98kB) seems too large for the displayed image size (27 × 20 pixels).
I reattached it below to see if it causes any problems with my post/upload, but it didn't.

I just tested a random bunch of browser-cache-folder pics that happen to range from 45kb to 712kb and they all appear to have correctly uploaded and displayed at this moment.

I'm having the same problem. Error message says "it was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image".

Question, but why doesn't Endless Sphere allow for non members to view uploaded images?

If other forums like BudgetLightForum and Second Life Storage allow for non-members to view images, wouldn't it be better to grant access everyone full image quality? Alternatively, just restrict file sizes of pictures uploaded to the forum.

I agree. To fully benefit from the archive of existing posts in order to solve an issue, frequently the pic contain key pieces of information. If someone comes to ES to find the answer to a single question, and needs to create an account just for that purpose (and not even for posting themselves), never to be used again, then the creation of that member account is just extra junk.
But, given that this thread was created 14 years ago, where technology and storage created more limitations, seems like the issue could be revisited in light of what we have today.

I think there may be an file size limitation in place based on my test of uploading an animated GIF image last week. When the file size was, I assume, too large, ES would act like it was uploading, and semi displayed the GIF in the process, only to error out when it was fully uploaded. I shortened the animation little by little to reduce the file size, and at one point it was successful (not a file type issue, but a file size issue, was my conclusion).

Hmm. I don't have to be logged in to see images (just verified in a relatively recent version of Chrome I've never used to visit ES with).

Clicking on "thumbnails" does ask me to login to see the full size, but I can see the in-post image version. I checked several random threads from the root of the forums in various subforums.

Are there any specific posts with images that aren't working when not logged in?

on both my Pc and iPad, clicking on your photos in the post above creates an error stating that you must be logged in fo perform that action, and the login screen pops up.

I should have been clearer.

Full size images should be available to non-members.

Some images (like graphs) are impossible to view with a low res thumbnail.

The reason in simple language. Forum is hosted on a server. Pictures take up more bites then text. If lots of people or robots look at big pictures, the server will get overloaded and the forum will run slow or just conk out. To allow the world to view big pictures would require a bigger more expensive server.

Technology enables, then technology disables. It’s a wonder that there’s any progress.

Very expensive at the scale we operate at. This is a sane default for Xenforo forums. Especially now considering the huge scraper traffic.

One time we served 1TB of text in a day because someone linked our website to hackernews. If we added full size images, the server would have delivered petabytes and we get charged by the gigabyte

Tell ya what.. i'm throwing you and the rest of the internet a bone. I increased the thumbnail size from 180px to 240px. We'll easily make up for the difference when we get our image re-processor working.

I've got an interesting compromise to try with you instead if you may.

How about you add full res images if the images we upload don't exceed the maximum file size of thumbnails? :)

As in, if I manage to encode an image tightly enough, you could still show the full resolution image.

Unfortunately all the underlying Xenforo code is thinking in terms of pixel widths and not file sizes :/

Our aftermarket image processor is general purpose and can't tell thumbnails from other images.

Here's two options:
A) We find some easy way to correlate thumbnails with full images and implement this conditional swap in the image processor.

B) We find out how well, on average that the image reprocessor cuts thumbnail file sizes, and split the extra filesize reduction and possible resolution increase 50/50

In case A if you want a high chance of something being full resolution'd to end users, you should upload a .png of the graph, and the graph shouldn't contain gradients or 3d effects - just be flat. If you do that, your chances of full resolution to guests should be over 95%.

I think this could benefit users of the site and this is a good idea. We'll see if A) is possible w/o a ton of work when we get a moment.

How to attach a gif animation file so anyone can see it as animation?

For some reason the gif animation I attached shows just the fist frame of the animation and looks like a static picture if I look on it from other browser (or maybe it is because of look on it as guest?). From the original browser it looks OK, from other browser I logged in from it looks OK too, but from a browser I am not logged in it is not animated.
