I’ve been having some ideas rolling in the back of my head around using the Asin planetary power split transmissions on projects, and that one video series of that guy who put a Prius powertrain in his boat is stuck in my head. He set it up so all the essentials from the car needed to convince the engine to work were still present however and it was a pretty cumbersome setup, which if you have an engine room in a boat, that’s potentially manageable, however I seek direct control of MG1 and MG2 with the minimum equipment needed, ideally to the extent that I tell a controller over CAN to push current or pull current and direction from a respective motor, kinda like how the VESC does. I’ve seen some suggestions that VECUs have been done, but not great documentation of it working. Another option is replacing the OEM motor controllers for external ones, which Google keeps steering me toward the Kelly controllers, but somewhat lack of demonstrated use for high voltage controllers leaves me a bit wanting in confidence for the price of them. In an ideal world, I use a VESC that controls the OEM IGBT modules, that already have bus bars and cooling, etc., but I appreciate that there’s significantly more involved in making that happen, and the Prius IGBT module doesn’t exactly have a lot of pinout documentation for each generation.

Any advice for what direction to go to accomplish a direct motor control setup on those transmissions would be appreciated.
