Yep, aero-velomobiles have been arround for some time. Another one that was specifically designed to be aero is Quest.
In my opinion all of them are pretty horrible designs, for the following reasons:
- No safety cell. That ultralight fairing will be as good as being hit on bicycle
- You sit low, so cars don't see you well and if they hit you they'll ride right over you
- Fairing is open to the ground and is close to the ground. So aero shell resonates and is really loud. You can hear that in youtube videos. Plus you get mud, water, etc inside.
- The ones you can buy are crazy expensive, $5k+ without motor
But on the other hand those are for sale, available and have sold in quite some numbers.
I love Aprillia concept, but it looks like it ended with CAD design. It looks heavy, high power, complicated.
Warren, your desing looks great. I think it's pretty close to what Aptera. Might be some work to build it. I'm thinking to have just 3 parts - bottom fairing, top fairing, steel tube chassis that accepts standard bicycle components, for simplicity.
It's great to see free bike plans, but the problem is classic velomobile layout - low seat position, no crash protection.
