Aero e-bike concept

Don't forget about the Aerorider at http://www.aerorider.com/

Looks like your desired glider cockpit.

Yep, aero-velomobiles have been arround for some time. Another one that was specifically designed to be aero is Quest.

In my opinion all of them are pretty horrible designs, for the following reasons:
- No safety cell. That ultralight fairing will be as good as being hit on bicycle
- You sit low, so cars don't see you well and if they hit you they'll ride right over you
- Fairing is open to the ground and is close to the ground. So aero shell resonates and is really loud. You can hear that in youtube videos. Plus you get mud, water, etc inside.
- The ones you can buy are crazy expensive, $5k+ without motor

But on the other hand those are for sale, available and have sold in quite some numbers.

I love Aprillia concept, but it looks like it ended with CAD design. It looks heavy, high power, complicated.

Warren, your desing looks great. I think it's pretty close to what Aptera. Might be some work to build it. I'm thinking to have just 3 parts - bottom fairing, top fairing, steel tube chassis that accepts standard bicycle components, for simplicity.

It's great to see free bike plans, but the problem is classic velomobile layout - low seat position, no crash protection.

Ja, the Aptera is prob closest to your design spec. It has high profile and a safety-cell.

The new vehicle could lower itself for entry/exit and rise for travel. Kooky perhaps; but it should be convenient to get into, in some fashion.

:D

So far that 'problem' hasn't proven to be an issue. Catrike, WizWheelz, TerraTrikes, Greenspeed, hase and a number of other trike manufactures' are reporting brisk sales. I'd guess at least a few hundred or more trikers beating asphalt daily. No instances that i've heard of lately,.. and the bulk of these are naked trikes sans brightly painted farings.

Papa, what you say is true. I ride my bike every day to the subway stop, and it has no crash protection. Non electric version can't have any, because it would be too heavy to pedal. So we're stuck with it. My subway stop has probably few hundred bikes parked in the morning. Both I and many of my friends had serious injuries in accidents. A guy I knew quite well died. I If you look at statistics in places like India or China where majority of people ride bikes/moped, safety record is horrible. Motorcyle stats also tell a story. Each mile traveled has 18 times higher probability of death than same trip in a car. It's easy to underestimate cost of things that don't happen often. Adding up the expense of injury I had it's 10x more than all bikes I ever bought and more than safe new car.

Trikes like greenspeed - they are unquestionably more comfortable, aero efficient, etc. But they constitute probably 0.1% of bike sales and I have yet to see one riding on a public street. I wouldn't do that.

Bottom line: need a design that's safer than diamond frame bicycle on public streets and is aero efficient :) Those free plans are not it.

BMW C1 crash tests show what is possible in terms of safety. Actually I think C1 was almost perfect platform for electrifying. Too bad the concept didn't catch on. I think the problems were more mismanged manufacturing and marketting rather than technical.

BugE looks great! Never saw it before. I still think they compromised too much for convenience :) I want something that looks like a rocket, no creature comforts for me
I know this is an old thread but when I read your post about the BugE I was sure you haven't seen it from the top looking down. You want a rocket? Looks like one to me :D
